Adult Day Programme: Clinical Nurse Specialist
This is a unique opportunity for a nurse to further their practice and experience within a specialist setting, working within our Day Programme Service. This role offers the development of care coordination and nursing leadership skills as part of the management teams. You will be a motivated, empathic, skilled and dedicated individual who can work autonomously as well as part of the wider team. Excellent communication skills in all domains are essential, with the ability to work flexibly and dynamically within the various teams in the service as needed. You will be well supported by a friendly, skilled MDT, with regular line management and good clinical supervision in various forms.
Main duties
* Providing support to clients diagnosed with Eating Disorders via meal support, supervision, key work
* Develop and facilitate specialist therapeutic groups as part of the programme
* Ensuring patient safety and care is maintained at a high standard
* Develop specialist risk assessment and care planning skills in a community day programme setting
* Providing supervision to junior staff and students
* Completion of audits
* Deputising for day programme manager if required

Job responsibilities
* Clinical Roles: Ensure nursing practice is in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Mental Health Legislation, respecting differences in gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, culture and disability
* To ensure that planning of care occurs within the framework of CPA, support band 5 nursing staff to ensure relevant documentation is completed
* To communicate with families and carers to support patient care
* To act as group facilitator/co-facilitator, including supervision of meals in dining room, and in inpatient and day patient groups
* Participate in general and specific patient observations, recording of relevant information and reporting concerns, including ECGs and Venepuncture as per care plan
* Participate in insertion of Nasogastric tubes and administration of prescribed diet as per care plan
* Support patients to eat in the dining room and role-model supportive interventions
* Promote and safeguard the interests and well-being of patients, visitors and colleagues
* Support patients in leave of the ward with escort if required and ensure safety
* Participate in social, occupational and psychological activities with patients to maximise therapeutic opportunities
* Administer medications as per chart and participate in safe storage of medications including stock rotation and audits
* Participate in rotational duties and working in alternative care settings as required
Management of resources
* Deputise and provide senior nurse cover as part of the management team
* Assist in establishing an efficient working environment and use of staff, supplies and services
* Utilise resources to benefit the service while considering resource implications
* Follow Trust policies and procedures
* Report maintenance requirements and difficulties to the nurse in charge
* Support investigations, disciplinary investigations, and staff performance data collection in collaboration with the management team
* Inform Managers of difficulties or complaints and ensure action according to Trust Policy
* Lead or assist in recruitment and selection of new staff
* Deliver high-quality, evidence-based service to inpatients within available resources
* Collaborate with the management team to organise care across the service
Communications and liaison
* Form positive, therapeutic relationships with people experiencing acute crisis or distress, using excellent communication skills
* Keep Ward Manager and Matron informed of professional concerns and promote professional practice
* Ensure confidential information is stored and shared in line with data protection
* Maintain patient records confidentially, including documentation of weights and vital signs
* Maintain ongoing records of clinical activities using approved Trust mediums
Research & Development
* Undertake audits to develop nursing practice
* Participate in clinical research as directed by the Clinical Governance Team
* Keep abreast of best practice in Eating Disorders and share within teams
* Contribute to nursing care standards and development of care pathways
Training
* Contribute to a culture of shared learning and evidence-based practice
* Stay up to date with developments in eating disorders and mental health, applying them to service improvements
* Engage in regular clinical supervision
* Be aware of personal development needs and pursue them
* Ensure up-to-date NMC registration
* Train and mentor students on placement, acting as student link for local education providers
Person specification
Qualifications
* Essential: Current NMC Registration
* Mentorship, Preceptorship or Equivalent Student Support Training
* RMN
Desirable:
* Regular updating in nursing clinical practice
* Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) Training
* Degree or Postgraduate qualification relevant to the post
Experience
* Essential: Significant post-registration experience; supervising or working with student nurses; nursing assessment and safe care planning; case load management; experience with eating disorders and comorbidities; effective delegation
* Desirable: Involvement in audit/research; transferable skills to Eating Disorders; specialist assessments in community settings; therapy skills training
Skills and knowledge
* Respectful, culturally sensitive care; knowledge of CPA, Mental Health Act, supervised discharge and current legislation
* Excellent risk assessment and mental health assessment skills
* Good physical care knowledge related to mental health and eating disorders
* Venipuncture and ECG procedures or willingness to be trained
* Ability to work independently and manage a heavy workload
* Understanding of family/carer issues
