Fed up with PHP jobs where you're just another pair of hands fixing someone else's bugs?
At Bonacia, we're looking for a PHP Developer who wants more than that.
This is your chance to own a brand. You'll be the go-to developer for Leavers Books, working on our bespoke yearbook creator, customer database, and website.
No frameworks.
No "just buy a plugin."
You'll be building and shaping features from scratch, solving problems your way, and helping us take the brand global.
Who are Leavers' Books?
Leavers' Books has been working with primary schools across the UK for over 14 years, giving them a simple, easy-to-use online creator to design their end-of-primary yearbooks.
In recent years, we've dipped our toes into the secondary school market – and now we're ready to make a bigger splash. With big growth plans ahead, including taking the brand global, it's an exciting time to get on board.
This isn't your typical kind of role. We build from scratch. We problem-solve. We create tools that actually do what our customers need – and we do it in plain English, no jargon necessary.
What you'll be doing
* Taking full ownership of the Leavers Books online creator and systems
* Maintaining and improving our bespoke PHP codebase (no frameworks here)
* Managing and improving the customer database and keeping everything running smoothly
* Adding new features and making existing processes slicker
* Working closely with the tech team and other departments to grow the brand
* Helping us get Leavers Books ready for global launch
What we're looking for
* Strong PHP skills (raw PHP, not just frameworks)
* Solid understanding of MySQL and database design
* Experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
* A knack for solving problems creatively and logically
* Confidence working on bespoke systems without relying on off-the-shelf solutions
* Good communication skills – we talk like humans here
* Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects
Bonus points if…
You've worked on e-commerce or online platforms, handled image/PDF generation or web-to-print technology, or you've got ideas for making yearbook creation even more awesome.
Why join us?
* You'll have genuine ownership of a brand with big plans
* Join a creative, supportive in-house tech team
* Work on projects that make a real difference to our customers
