Cancer Internship Programme

We are recruiting registered nurses to our Cancer Internship Programme, which will start in June 2026. The programme aims to develop the specialist cancer workforce and deliver excellence in the care and management of patients affected by cancer.


Programme Objectives

* Support succession planning within specialist cancer nursing workforce by providing registered nurses with the opportunity to build specialist knowledge, skills and experience through direct involvement with our cancer services.
* Retain experienced and motivated qualified staff by offering structured career development opportunities for individuals interested in progressing within cancer nursing and specialist cancer practice.
* Develop the clinical competence, skills and knowledge of each intern, enhancing patient experience across our cancer pathways and supporting excellence in cancer care.
* Enable interns to lead positive service improvements within their area of practice by applying the learning and experience gained throughout the programme.


Main Duties

The duration of the programme is 18 months, and successful applicants will be committed to 7.5 hours per week of learning. Cancer interns will be expected to:

* Develop specialist knowledge and skills using the Cancer Internship Competency Framework.
* Work as part of specialist cancer teams across STSFT through a series of clinical placements. Placement areas may include chemotherapy services, oncology, haematology, cancer nursespecialists, and diagnostic/supportive care pathways.
* Work collaboratively with acute, community, and multidisciplinary teams to broaden understanding of the full cancer pathway and the wider support needs of people affected by cancer.
* Identify and implement a cancer-focused service improvement initiative within their current area of practice to enhance the quality of care and patient experience.
* Complete a PgCert in Cancer Care at Level 7 with University of Teesside.


Job Responsibilities

NHS England are supporting a 4th cohort of the Cancer Internship Programme at STSFT. The programme is designed for Registered Nurses with post registration experience in a clinical area and an interest in cancer nursing. The individual may aspire to move into a Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist role in the future.

The programme will incorporate clinical placements in cancer teams throughout the programme. There will be 3 core hub areas in which the intern will spend a proportion of their time within the 18‑month programme. These will be allocated following the application process. As part of the programme interns will complete a PgCert in Cancer Care (60 credits) at Level 7 in partnership with the University of Teesside.

Person Specification

* Registered Nurse with post registration experience.
* Interest in cancer nursing and exposure to cancer clinical settings.
* Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and contribute to service improvements.
* Commitment to continuous professional development.


Qualifications

* Degree in nursing studies or a relevant clinical degree.
* Mentorship certificate, Practice Assessor training, or demonstrable equivalent experience.


Experience

* Minimum 2 years’ experience as a registered nurse, including completion of preceptorship if internationally educated.
* Evidence of continued practice development.
* Experience coordinating care for a caseload of patients.
* Evidence of leading innovation in practice.
* Experience leading a team.
* Evidence of leading change management.

Salary

£32,073 to £39,043 per year pro rata for part time – 7.5 hours per week.
