Purpose of Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative mathematician to join our team in a unique role that combines digital resource development, outreach, and teaching. The successful candidate will be involved in a project to create engaging, interactive digital resources aligned to SCQF levels 4-6 and contribute to the development of micro-credentials as an alternative qualification pathway into undergraduate degrees in mathematics and related areas.

Following the initial two-year project phase, the post-holder will transition into a core Teaching and Scholarship role within the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. This will include delivery of early-year undergraduate courses, engaging in outreach activities with schools and communities, and undertaking scholarship activities to enhance teaching practice

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Digital Resource Development

1. Design and develop interactive, pedagogically informed digital resources aligned to SCQF level 4-6 Mathematics.
2. Collaborate with internal and external content creators and communicators to produce engaging short-form video content and other innovative formats.
3. Ensure resources are accessible, inclusive, and appealing to diverse learners, including school pupils, college students, and independent learners

Micro-Credentials

4. Contribute to the design and implementation of micro-credentials as alternative qualification pathways.
5. Support the process of SCQF accreditation for micro-credentials.

Collaboration

6. Work closely with colleagues across the university (Mathematics Department, Digital Teams, Marketing, Maths Support Service) and external partners such as schools, colleges and content specialists.

Teaching, Scholarship and Outreach

7. Deliver lectures, tutorials, and workshops for early-year undergraduate mathematics courses.
8. Develop high-quality course materials and assessments.
9. Engage in outreach activities to promote mathematics and support widening access initiatives.
10. Undertake scholarship activities to enhance teaching practice, support curriculum enhancement and contribute to the department’s evidence-based approach to mathematics education.

Essential & Desirable Criteria

Essential

11. PhD in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Mathematical Sciences or a related discipline.
12. Demonstrated experience in creating digital learning resources or a clear commitment to developing this expertise.
13. Strong understanding of school, college, or early university mathematics curricula, supported by teaching experience at one or more of these levels.
14. Excellent communication skills and ability to convey mathematical ideas in an engaging and accessible way.
15. A strong commitment to promoting mathematics and inspiring learners

Desirable

16. Familiarity with Qualifications Scotland (previously the SQA) Mathematics qualifications and/or SCQF accreditation processes.
17. Experience in delivering outreach to schools, families or community groups.
18. Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching practices and widening participation.
19. Skills in educational technology, interactive platforms, or social media for learning.
20. Experience working on collaborative or multidisciplinary projects
