Join a vibrant research environment as a Fieldwork Research Associate contributing to the Ecologies of Governance project in the School of History, Classics & Archaeology at Newcastle University. This role centres on deepening our understanding of early medieval kin-based societies by exploring the environmental and agrarian dynamics of key royal landscapes in Britain and Ireland. You’ll be part of an interdisciplinary team, collaborating with colleagues at Queen’s University Belfast and Cardiff University, and helping to shape ambitious archaeological research into how past social and ecological systems interacted.

In this role, you will take a lead in designing and delivering archaeological fieldwork programmes, applying geospatial and remote sensing methods, and conducting targeted excavations to map and interpret the evolution of early medieval settlements and their landscapes. You will oversee day-to-day fieldwork activities and collaborate closely with project partners to ensure rigorous and innovative approaches to collecting and analysing data. You will also engage with outreach activities across research and engagement settings.

The position is offered on a fixed-term full-time basis for up to 30 months, with a preferred start date in May 2026. The post holder must be willing to travel as part of the fieldwork programme.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should hold a PhD in Archaeology or a closely related discipline at the time of application. A background in archaeological field research and a strong understanding of landscape archaeology and early medieval contexts will be essential for success.


Required Expertise, Skills

* Proven ability to independently deliver archaeological fieldwork programmes.
* Expertise in geophysical and topographic survey techniques and excavation methods.
* Collaborative research experience and ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams.
* Competence in GIS, remote sensing analysis, and handling archaeological datasets.
* Strong communication and organisational skills appropriate to complex research settings.


Salary Details

The salary range for this role is £35,608 to £37,694 per annum.
