The UHBW Department of General Anaesthesia sits within the Division of Surgery; however the wider anaesthesia service bridges four clinical divisions of UHBW: Surgery (general anaesthesia and critical care), Weston Division, Specialized Services (cardiac anaesthesia) and Women’s and Children’s (paediatric and obstetric anaesthesia). The Department of Anaesthesia is seeking consultants in general anaesthesia to join the team based at Weston General Hospital. The post will be offered at 10 PAs. The successful applicant will join the team in supporting a busy and high quality service providing general anaesthesia in a small hospital, with the support of, and close work with, the wider department across all UHBW sites.
Main duties of the job
The post will be based at Weston General Hospital and will support the provision of general anaesthesia services for a variety of specialties, including upper and lower GI surgery, trauma & orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, preoperative assessment and acute pain. There will be the opportunity to work across the UHBW sites; however applicants should expect the majority of their work to focus on Weston. In addition to daytime sessions, the successful applicant will participate in the weekend on‑call rota (currently approximately 1:8) and evening sessions (currently approximately 1:8) covering emergency operations until 20:00, plus overnight on call at Weston. The Department of Anaesthesia supports the pre‑operative assessment service and acute pain service, as such the appointee will contribute to this area.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Training
* Fully registered with GMC.
* Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) or equivalent, or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview.
* Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview (CESR exempt).
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthesia (or equivalent).
* Must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register for Anaesthesia to start Consultant appointment.
Essential Experience
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective – including anaesthesia for trauma and orthopaedics, urology, gynaecology, major upper and lower abdominal surgery, pre‑operative assessment and acute pain.
* Evidence of a specialist interest in at least one of the following areas: major general, regional anaesthesia or peri‑operative medicine.
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Desirable Experience
* Evidence of developing a specialist service or demonstration of innovation in chosen sub‑specialty.
* Higher acute pain training or experience.
Essential Clinical Knowledge and Skills
* Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty.
* Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty.
* Log book evidence of major general and gynaecology, urology, orthopaedics and trauma, pre‑operative assessment, and acute pain.
