Control Period 7 (CP7) brought the opportunity to deliver capital works in new ways. Network Rail has built upon lessons from other major programmes to drive greater value and efficiency into project delivery, creating the Southern Renewals Enterprise.
Works Delivery is one of the five partners in this Enterprise with a workbank of £1.3bn this Control Period, delivering schemes across Track, Signalling, Telecommunications, Electrification & Plant, Buildings and Civils. We deliver over 400 projects a year, offering a multidisciplinary environment for career growth.
You'll play a key role in ensuring a safe, efficient, and reliable railway for both passenger and freight services across the Southern Region.

Job Summary
We are seeking highly skilled and motivated Principal Technical Officers [Track] to join our Works Delivery Engineering team. This exciting opportunity allows professionals to play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, quality, and technical excellence of our track refurbishment and renewal projects.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Lead technical tasks, ensuring work is carried out safely in line with procedures, method statements, Task Briefing sheets and work plans.
* Manage and assess the quality of work to ensure assets meet compliance standards.
* Coordinate and undertake surveys to support scoping the works and prepare work specifications, method statements, and plans, ensuring optimal resource allocation.
* Assist in the production of detailed track designs and supporting documentation, participate in design reviews and seek approvals as required.
* Keep systems and records up to date, ensuring accurate and timely information management.
* Supervise and provide technical support to the team, offering guidance on equipment design, installation, testing, and commissioning.
* Manage On Track Machine operations and track engineering works, ensuring high‑quality output and safety standards, achieving installation tolerances.
* Conduct technical inspections, tests, and data analysis to identify and resolve issues efficiently.
* Prioritize work, agree on plans, and ensure the timely delivery of critical tasks.
* Contribute to your professional development and that of your colleagues.
Skills, knowledge and experience required
* Strong technical support experience with a focus on tack/permanent way maintenance and construction management, systems and standards.
* Expertise in design requirements, processes, and techniques for track and infrastructure projects.
* Ability to demonstrate, promote, and embed safe working practices within the team.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Relevant competencies and qualifications required for the role, including NVQ Level 3 or 4 in engineering/leadership or equivalent.
* A full, valid driving license and willingness to drive vehicles as required.
* Knowledge of design requirements, processes and techniques including experience of producing detailed horizontal and vertical designs from conventional survey data.
* Creating witness diagrams, Track Designs (Coordinated and Half‑adake), experience of stressing designs, competent in Stressing levels 1, 2 and 3.
* Understanding and good knowledge of Critical Rail Temperature Management and stressing of Continuous Welded Rail.
* Competent and experienced at TR13/Raising and Removing speeds up to level 4.
* Experience and competent in the installation of track on site including design tamping via ALC and MOST.
* Planning and arranging surveys, 2D & 3D track surveys (Coordinated). Site validation and setting out prior to core weekend delivery. Conversant in Trimble Business Centre.
* Understanding H&S File process and implementation including NRG uploads where required.
* Surveying and procurement of Longitudinal Bearers for Longitudinal Bearer systems and a good understanding of the civil components that form part of that system.
