We are now seeking to appoint the key post of Medical Directorto join our leadership team. This is an exciting and rewarding role with theopportunity to make a real difference in improving the health and wellbeing ofour communities.
Main duties of the job
As Medical Director you will have leadership responsibilityfor achieving the highest quality and safety standards across our services. Youwill provide clinical leadership to our clinical workforce and advice and guidanceto the Board. You will work with colleagues to identify innovation in relationto our use of digital technologies and on our quality strategy and assuranceframeworks.
You will also work closely with the Chief Executive to buildon the existing relationships with our ICS, place, and provider partners andimportantly to lead on developing the relationships with ICB Medical Directors.In addition, you will provide input into tenders, bids and contracts, and thedevelopment and provision of new and innovative services.

The Birmingham and District GP Emergency Room (Badger) Ltd is a not-for-profit social enterprise healthcare co-operative with an annual turnover of £13 million and a staff population of 422 people. Badger was established in 1996 by local doctors who joined together to initially provide an improved out-of-hours service for their patients.
Job responsibilities
To develop and delivery relevant strategies and provide medical leadershipacross the whole organisation, with responsibility for clinical input andoversight.
Provide direction to the Head of Clinical Department to ensure the departmentruns smoothly.
To be part of the Senior Management Team and contribute to the developmentand implementation of Badgers Vision, Strategy and Business Objectives.
Help develop strategic, clinical, and operational relationships with managerialand clinical leaders within key partner organisations.
To work with the Head of Quality & Performance to develop Badgers QualityStrategy, ensuring that it supports the delivery of the wider organisationalStrategy providing leadership to the Manager of Clinical Department ensuringthat it is understood by medical and clinical colleagues as well as systemleaders, commissioners, and partners.
To scan the horizon for opportunities which will benefit clinical delivery ofservices, immediately, or the future, using strong networks and partnershipworking to identify such opportunities as well as influence at an ICS, regionaland national level.
External/Internal Partnerships
Working with the Manager of Clinical, Head of Technology & Head of BusinessDevelopment you will identify new health business opportunities, which buildon the strengths of the organisation, converting them to generate income,internal investment and integrating them into the organisation, as appropriate;
To participate in regional and national groups relating to the provision of Out ofHours and Urgent Care e.g. UHUK;
Importantly, working with the Chief Executive as well as Badgers AssociateMedical Directors/membership, build relationships with ICS Medical Directorsand Chief Medical Officers.
To work with the Chief Executive in the management of all internal and externalmessages, communications and media issues.
Leadership
To maintain effective medical leadership, provide clinical training, set standardsand role model tri-partite leadership, providing medical input, development andsupport to Associate Medical Directors, Clinical Leads and all clinicians acrossBadger, maximising the effectiveness of the clinical, medical, and operationalleadership structure.
To provide highly visible, supportive leadership to Badgers workforce, rolemodelling Badgers SERQ values of Safety, Efficiency, Respect and Qualityensuring excellence across the organisation.
To line manage the Manager of the Clinical Department on clinical engagementand management and provide the Chief Executive and Board with advice andguidance on matters related to clinical engagement and retention.
To provide input to the Badger Training Academy and ensure the developmentof clinical skills across registered and non-registered clinical roles, offering thepossibility of professional development and progression.
To undertake the role of Chief Clinical Information Officer by working closelywith the Manager of the Clinical Department, Chief Technology Officer, Headof Performance & Quality and Chief Executive, using technology andinformatics to transform the delivery of clinical practice, for the benefit of ourpatients.
To support the Manager of the Clinical Department and Head of Performance& Quality in ensuring the highest standards of clinical governance are set andmaintained across the organisation, ensuring that clinical governance systemsand processes meet regulatory standards, reflect best practice, anddemonstrate learning from serious incidents and audits.
To work with the Director of Workforce and the Manager of the ClinicalDepartment to develop effective recruitment and retention strategies forclinicians and for the extension of clinical roles, to ensure an effective, engaged,and sustainable workforce both now, and in the future.
To work closely with sessional clinicians to identify efficient working practicesand activity monitoring to ensure clinical staff work efficiently and provide goodvalue for money to Badger and the wider health economy.
Clinical Governance
To work with the Head of Performance & Quality and Manager of the ClinicalDepartment to provide advice and guidance to the Board on quality and safetyissues, providing expertise and a medical lens on a range of qualityimprovement, quality assurance and safety issues pertinent to Badgersservices.
To work with the Director of Workforce, Head of Performance & Quality andManager of Clinical Department to provide advice and guidance to the Boardon a range of medical management issues, pertinent to Badgers services.
To work with the Manager of the Clinical Department, Head of Performance &Quality and Associate Medical Directors to ensure that Badger has robust,effective clinical governance systems to support our salaried and sessionalclinicians through appraisal and revalidation, and that they participateappropriately.
To provide effective leadership and assurance on clinical audit and professionalstandards.
To work with the Head of Performance & Quality, Manager of ClinicalDepartment and Associate Medical Directors to provide medical insight andmake recommendations to the Board on external advice, guidance,requirements, and legislation including recommendations from regulators andadvisory bodies such as NICE, DHSC and GMC publications, as well asnational inquiries and external investigations.
To act as Badgers Caldicott Guardian. You should have a good workingunderstanding of information governance requirements.
