<div><h3>Clinical Fellow ST3+ in Intensive Care Medicine with Special Interest in Echocardiography</h3><p><b>The closing date is 18 June 2026</b></p><p>Day-to-day care of patients on the adult neurosurgical and general Critical Care units. Full-time including participation in a full shift rota system (48 hours per week).</p><p>Applications are invited for appointment to Senior Clinical Fellow with specialist interest in Echocardiography (ST4+ or equivalence) for a fixed‑term period from August 2026 for 12 months.</p><p>The post is solely based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.</p><h3>Main duties of the job</h3><p>This role provides an opportunity to develop experience in a busy tertiary intensive care unit and to gain qualifications and experience in echocardiography, either pre‑ or post‑CCT. It is suitable for those working through the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) route to completion of training in intensive care medicine.</p><p>The post supports accreditation in FUSIC and both BSE Level 1 and 2. Posts may be extended up to 2 years for BSE Level 2 completion with mutual agreement. Approximately 20% of daytime activity will be protected for training in echocardiography on intensive care and outpatient lists.</p><h3>Job responsibilities</h3><ul><li>The Clinical Fellow must ensure that patients are managed in a timely and appropriate way in all aspects of critical care: resuscitation, stabilisation, working diagnosis, adequate monitoring, treatment, and discharge.</li><li>Provide detailed handover of complex patients.</li><li>Promptly assess critically ill patients referred to ICU and work closely with the Outreach Team, reviewing and managing unstable ward patients.</li><li>Participate in daily consultant ward rounds and review all admissions.</li><li>Coordinate and evaluate suitability for ICU admission in consultation with the ICU Consultant.</li><li>Communicate regularly with patients’ relatives.</li><li>Identify patients suitable for discharge and liaise with ward teams.</li><li>Attend and participate in critical care teaching (lectures, journal club presentations, M&M, Clinical Governance).</li><li>Other management areas may be arranged based on achieved competencies and requirements.</li><li>Comply with UHSx infection and patient safety guidelines.</li></ul><h3>Person Specification – Experience & Qualifications</h3><ul><li>Full GMC registration with licence to practice.</li><li>Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.</li><li>Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Paediatric Life Support of equivalent.</li><li>European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine or FFICM.</li><li>Primary FRCA/MRCP/MRCEM.</li></ul><h3>Clinical Skills & Experience</h3><ul><li>At least 2 years’ experience in critical care medicine through dedicated placements.</li><li>Working at a senior level compatible with ST4+.</li><li>Advanced airway skills – 6 months or more of dedicated anaesthetic placement.</li><li>Independent placement of invasive lines: CVP, arterial line, renal replacement lines.</li><li>Experience in neurosurgical intensive care.</li><li>Experience in cardiothoracic intensive care.</li><li>Additional experience in complementary specialties including emergency medicine, acute medicine, renal medicine, respiratory medicine, paediatric critical care.</li></ul><h3>Organisation & Planning</h3><ul><li>Experience and ability to work in multi‑professional teams.</li><li>Understanding of NHS, clinical governance, and resource constraints.</li><li>Evidence of managerial skills – achievements or courses attended.</li><li>Rota management.</li></ul><h3>Teaching</h3><ul><li>Evidence of commitment to teaching beyond bedside teaching.</li><li>Recognised teaching qualification.</li><li>Development of education programmes.</li></ul><h3>Academic & Research</h3><ul><li>Evidence of participation in audit or research that has impacted clinical practice and service provision.</li><li>Research experience.</li><li>Publications.</li><li>Prizes and honours.</li><li>Evidence of engagement in patient safety projects.</li><li>Appropriate progression of career to date.</li><li>Looking for a career in ICM either as a single or dual specialty.</li><li>Evidence of portfolio working towards a CCT in ICM as part of CESR.</li></ul><h3>Disclosure and Barring Service Check</h3><p>This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.</p></div>
