Main duties of the job

You will already be broadly experienced in all aspects of Community Paediatrics. You are competent in assessing children for suspected abuse and neglect, able to diagnose and manage a range of neurodevelopmental problems (including ASD & ADHD) and neurodisability, and experienced in aspects of child mental health related to child development.

If successful, you will work across Luton and Bedfordshire and be part of a passionate team who are always looking at ways to develop and improve the service for our users.


Job responsibilities

We are looking to appoint two enthusiastic Community Consultant Paediatricians to join our dynamic Community Paediatrics team in Luton and Bedfordshire. Each post will have a maximum of 10 programmed activities each, and candidates wishing to work part-time are also invited to apply. We seek candidates experienced in Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics, Neuro-disability and Safeguarding Children. There is potential for taking on or developing a lead role depending on the suitability, experience and interest.

Responsibilities include:

* Provide clinical expertise for patient care within the Community Paediatric service, carry out child protection medical assessments one day a week (working hours only), provide training and supervision to a range of trainees, and contribute to departmental service improvement.
* Support development of further leadership experience.
* Work at Child Development Centre (CDC) in Kempston, Bedford, or at Edwin Lobo Centre (ELC), Redgrave Gardens, Luton, with possibility of working across both sites.
* Collaborate closely with acute paediatric teams at Bedford Hospital and Luton & Dunstable Hospital and participate in joint clinics such as neurology and orthopaedics.
* Conduct assessments and management of children and young people with developmental impairments, neuro-disability, and neurodivergence, including multi-disciplinary assessments (MDA).
* Provide medical assessments and reports for Education, Health and Care Plans.
* Conduct Child protection medical assessments for physical abuse & neglect.
* Provide Adoption medicals and Initial Health Assessments (IHAs) for Children in Care.

There are no out of hours on call requirements for this job. The post holders will be required to comply with GMC revalidation, participate in annual appraisal, and allocate time for CPD. Training and support is available to enable the role of Medical Appraiser within the Trust.


Personal and Professional development

Time is allocated within the job plan to support professional activities including CPD. Training and support is available to take on the role as a Medical Appraiser within the Trust.


Research & Training

We run weekly internal CPD activities, and the department has been involved in several regional and national research projects. We offer training in Community Paediatrics to a range of trainees from Foundation Year 2 to Grid trainees who rotate every six months. There is opportunity to take on the role of Clinical and/or Educational Supervisor.


Compliance with Corporate Management

The post holders will be required to work within CCS NHS Trust management policies and procedures, including those related to safeguarding children. Administrative and clinical duties will be allocated under the direction of the Clinical Lead and reflected in the job plan.


Clinical and Practice Governance

The post holders will participate in service improvement, quality assurance, and clinical effectiveness and risk management activities as required.


Facilities

Office accommodation and secretarial support will be provided, with access to an IT terminal, departmental IT system, intranet and internet.

Person Specification


Qualifications & Training

* MRCPCH by examination or equivalent.
* On the GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview.
* GMC Sub- Specialty Community Child Health or Paediatric Neuro-disability.


Experience

* At least 2 years training or clinical experience in Community Paediatrics including assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental disorder, neuro-disability and safeguarding concerns.
* Up to date Level 3+ Safeguarding Children training and competencies.
* Valid BLS Training.
* Valid APLS and NLS.
* Providing medical advice in Adoption & Fostering.


Skills

* Experience in Clinical and Educational Supervision.
* Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
* Experience of completing clinical audits, quality improvement, and service development.
* Competent and experienced in supervising trainees in carrying out Child protection medical assessments.
* Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government's agenda for its modernisation.
* Experience in Medical Appraisal.
* Research experience or publication.

£109,725 to £145,478 a year per annum, pro‑rata
