Senior Clinical Coder/Intermediate Clinical Coder
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is looking for motivated, highly enthusiastic and dynamic Senior or Intermediate Clinical Coder to join our clinical coding team.

Working pattern and remuneration
37.5 hours per week, 5 days (Mon–Friday). Flexible and part‑time hours considered. Band 5 Senior Clinical Coders may work from home on a rotational basis. Salary: £28,392 – £39,043 a year (Band 5 + 30 % R&R or Band 4 + 30 % R&R).
Responsibilities
You will be expected to maintain clinical coding skills and knowledge, and may gain experience in audit, training and mentoring. Additional tasks include:
* Complete coding and audit work within statutory deadlines.
* Provide training and mentoring to junior clinical coders.
* Engage with auditors and clinicians to clarify coding issues.
* Answer telephone queries in a professional manner.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* NCCQ (ACC Status) for Band 5 – required.
* Standards/Foundation Course for Band 4 – required.
* Good educational background or equivalent through training, qualification and experience.
Knowledge and Experience
* Substantive recent full‑time experience as a Clinical Coder in an acute NHS hospital, covering a wide range of specialities.
* In‑depth knowledge of ICD‑10 and OPCS‑4 coding classifications and NHS UK standards.
* Attendance at Clinical Coding Refresher Course every 2–3 years.
* Experience with paper and electronic records for clinical information extraction.
* Experience using encoder systems.
* Ability to manage workload and meet tight deadlines, individually and as a team.
* Sound knowledge of coding importance, data quality and patient confidentiality.
Skills and Aptitudes
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills to liaise with a range of hospital staff.
* Ability to prioritise, manage workload, and solve problems systematically.
* Teamwork and independent working capability.
* Professional telephone handling and message taking.
Flexibility
* Adaptable to demands of the post.
* Good time‑keeping and attendance record.
* Light physical effort required when handling case notes.
