Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions is a global leader in fluid management technologies. This role sits within the New Product Innovation (NPI) Engineering team and focuses on leading the design, development, and delivery of advanced electronic solutions for pumping applications.
Job Summary
Lead the electronics design function to shape the future of our industry-leading products, driving excellence in electronics engineering across multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Leadership & Team Management: Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing electronics design team with technical guidance, mentorship, and career development support.
* Operational Leadership: Set objectives, manage performance, conduct appraisals to foster continuous improvement and accountability. Recruit, onboard, and retain engineering talent aligned with growth strategy and values.
* Project Management: Plan and execute electronics design projects from concept to production, meeting timeline, budget, and quality objectives; collaborate with mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineers; oversee risk management, design verification, and documentation.
Technical Excellence
* Innovation & Standards: Stay abreast of trends in electronics, sensor technologies, embedded systems, and regulatory standards relevant to fluid management and process industries; establish and uphold best practices in circuit design, PCB layout, embedded firmware, and hardware-software integration.
* Design & Compliance: Review designs, schematics, and prototypes to ensure compliance with EMC, safety, and environmental regulations; ensure robust product certification processes.
* System Integration: Strong understanding of sensor technologies, signal processing, power electronics, and system integration challenges; knowledge of IoT, wireless protocols, and cybersecurity for embedded systems is desirable.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
* Communication: Act as the main point of contact for electronics design matters with senior management and stakeholders; translate market requirements and customer feedback into design solutions.
* Collaboration: Work with product management, sales, and customer support to ensure products meet customer needs; participate in customer visits, technical demonstrations, and field trials.
Continuous Improvement & Quality
* Quality Culture: Promote quality, reliability, and continuous improvement; lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for product or process issues; advocate modern design methodologies such as DFM, DFT, and robust prototyping.
Budgeting & Resource Allocation
* Budget Management: Develop and manage budgets for the electronics design function; monitor expenditure and identify cost-saving opportunities; ensure project delivery within financial parameters.
Skills & Experience
* Education: Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
* Experience: Proven electronics design and development track record, with at least 3 years in a leadership/management role in a high-technology, regulated industry (preferably industrial automation, instrumentation, or fluid management).
* Technical Proficiency:
* Expertise in analogue and digital circuit design, PCB layout, and embedded firmware development (C/C++, VHDL/Verilog); proficient with electronics CAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, Eagle) and simulation software; experience with design for EMC, safety standards (CE, UL) and product certification; strong sensor technologies, signal processing, power electronics, and system integration knowledge; IoT/wireless/cybersecurity for embedded systems desirable.
* Project Management: Experience managing multiple complex projects simultaneously, delivering on time and within budget.
* People Management: Ability to inspire, coach, and develop engineering talent in an inclusive, collaborative culture.
* Communication: Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
* Problem Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities with a pragmatic, solutions-oriented mindset.
