Overview
We are currently recruiting for an experienced personal assistant for an articulate young woman with Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, and PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance).
Hours: 4 hours per week (may include weekend shifts).
Area: Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Rate: £14.50 per hour.
Responsibilities
* Provide support to Josie in accessing the local community and accompanying her to engage in chosen activities.
* Promote independent living with a focus on domestic activities such as cookery and money management.
* Navigate public transport systems and promote independence in related activities.
* Monitor and manage Josie’s social media usage to balance screen time and ensure safety.
* Support Josie with routine planning and continuity to prevent overwhelm from sudden changes.
* Supervise and assist as needed due to Josie’s complex needs; implement de-escalation strategies for dysregulation and challenging behaviours.
Qualifications and Experience
* SEND experience is essential; ability to demonstrate strategies for deescalating dysregulation and challenging behaviours.
* Background knowledge of PDA is essential.
* Dog lover; Josie’s family has a pet dog and being comfortable around dogs is important.
* Experience supporting young people in community activities, trips to parks/beaches, and visiting venues to widen experiences.
Additional Information
* Josie currently resides with her family; routine and prior planning are important to support her effectively.
* Josie is currently completing an internship on a local farm; her favourite animals are alpacas (Cookie, Cola, Costa).
* When not on placement, opportunities may include visiting cafes/restaurants or a nail salon, and engaging in makeup/cosmetics interests.
* When Josie is at home, she enjoys social media and movies.
