Locum Consultant in Emergency General Surgery
Weare looking for an enthusiastic individual to fill a locum consultant postworking within the Leeds Institute of Emergency General Surgery (LIEGS) at theSt James University Hospital.
Anumber of our team are not eligible for traditional substantive appointmentsand as such we would welcome those not eligible, to apply for this locum post.
Leedsis one of the busiest acute general surgical centres in the UK and as such ourcase volume, service design and demonstrated committed investment is ensuringthe unit continues to develop and continues to be at forefront of acute generalsurgery services, clinically, educationally and academically in the UK.

Main duties of the job
Thenew consultant in Emergency General Surgery will join our existing team ofeleven consultants within the department which is led by Mr AdamPeckham-Cooper. This innovative, exciting, collaborative and flexibledepartment manages acute general surgery patients during the day runningamongst other things an Ambulatory Surgical Centre (ASC), a Surgical AssessmentUnit (SAU), elective Rapid Access and emergency theatres. The successfulapplicants will be encouraged to develop their own personal interests which mayinclude training, teaching, research and management. The unit has developedrapidly over the last four years but continues to present enormousopportunities in embedding Leeds as a national leader for innovation, researchand service delivery of emergency and acute care surgery.
Thesuccessful applicant should possess FRCS or equivalent, and should be on theSpecialist Register or within six months of being admitted onto the Registerfor trainees currently in a training programme within the UK, or havereferences which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director andClinical Director.
Candidates should have established skills andcompetencies in managing unselected Emergency General Surgery patient and itsrelated specialties including upper GI, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery. Astrong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a researchinterest is desirable.

Job responsibilities
LeedsInstitute of Emergency General Surgery is looking to appoint an EmergencyGeneral Surgeon to 10 PA locum contract.
Thenew consultant will join our existing team of eleven Consultants, which is ledby Adam Peckham-Cooper. As a unit we have worked hard to develop an exciting,challenging and fulfilling clinical job but within the job plan design there issignificant flexibility available for flexible working patterns, secondaryinterests, academia, management/leadership and to develop elective interests.Applicants with interests in upper GI, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery arewelcomed. The post will be 10 PAs but may also suit those wishing to seek moreflexible working patterns or hybrid careers.
Inrelation to this post, it will be available immediately and based at St JamessUniversity Hospital. The post holder will be responsible for delivering allaspects of acute care and unplanned surgery to adults, admitted to the trust.We have a number of unique and bespoke pathways to manage this patient cohortincluding a dedicated Ambulatory Surgical Centre, a separate SurgicalAssessment Unit, rapid access theatre lists and associated follow up clinicsand remain at the forefront of modern units delivering sub specialist emergencysurgical care in the country. Job plans can be flexible around the individualsneeds but include supervision and training of general surgical trainees andmedical students within the AMS Clinical Service Unit. The role includesdaytime (8.00-18.00) and weekend (8.00-18.00 on a 1:8 to 1:10 basis) working,without any night-time on call commitment as things stand.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1 To deliver high quality, evidence basedand compassionate patient care to emergency general surgery patients in Leedsand surrounding areas.
2.2 To make a significant contribution to thedevelopment, design, improvement, and delivery of the Acute Surgical Servicesin Leeds and surrounding areas, through clinical leadership and collaborationwith other key stakeholders.
2.3 To contribute to research, teaching andnew developments within Emergency General Surgery in Leeds. The post holderwill be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinicalresearch programs ongoing in the department
2.4 To support doctors in training within thedepartment with respect to educational supervision and appraisal and tocontribute to undergraduate teaching of students from the University of Leeds.We have an excellent track record in medical education, supervision andmentorship and training and teaching is a core element of the units mandate.
2.5 To support the Trust in its delivery ofits core services, recognising the importance of local and national standards,in particular delivery of CQC standards, the 4-hour Emergency Care Standard,same day emergency care and financial sustainability.

Person Specification
Experience
* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in contemporary management of emergency general surgery, acute biliary surgery and trauma surgery.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
* Should have completed a recognised training programme of specialist general surgical training or equivalent experience.
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
Additional Requirements
* Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
* Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary.
