Health & Safety Coordinator

6 months Fixed Term contract
35 hours per week
£35,100 per annum
Home working with some travel

The Children’s Society has been helping children and young people in this country for over 140 years. We deliver essential local services that provide safe, trusted support to children and young people during times of significant need.

Your role sits within our CEO Office, Finance Directorate and will be to lead and support the implementation of effective health and safety practices across the organisation.

About the role:

You will be a confident and practical Health& Safety professional who is comfortable working in a people‑focused, often fast‑paced charity environment.

A key part of this role will be your ability to ensure we meet our statutory obligations while fostering a positive, practical safety culture that aligns with our charitable values. You will work closely with colleagues at all levels, including senior leadership, to embed safe working practices across offices, services, shops, events and activities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Coordinate and maintain the organisation’s health and safety management framework
2. Develop, review and implement health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments
3. Provide advice and guidance to managers, staff and volunteers on health and safety matters
4. Ensure compliance with relevant UK health and safety legislation and best practice
5. Support accident, incident and near‑miss reporting, investigation and follow‑up
6. Monitor compliance through inspections, audits and review of controls
7. Coordinate health and safety training for staff and volunteers
8. Liaise with external bodies including insurers, regulators and consultants as required
9. Maintain accurate health and safety records and reports for internal governance purposes

The required skills and competencies for this role are

10. NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent qualification
11. Proven experience in a health and safety role, ideally within the charity, public or not‑for‑profit sector
12. Sound knowledge of UK health and safety legislation
13. Experience carrying out risk assessments and incident investigations
14. Ability to communicate clearly and sensitively with a wide range of stakeholders
15. Strong organisational and record‑keeping skills

It would also be an advantage if you have any of the following skills and competencies

16. Experience working with service‑user‑led and retail environments
17. Knowledge of safeguarding, lone working and community‑based service risks
