An exciting opportunity has become available for an enthusiastic, motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion sections of Blood Sciences at University Hospitals Dorset. We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist who is professional, reliable, innovative and flexible to join our friendly and hardworking team. The Haematology & Blood Transfusion department is part of the Blood Sciences department of University Hospitals Dorset. The post is based at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital (in The Dorset Pathology Hub), but the successful candidate will be working at our laboratory in Poole Essential Services Laboratory, on rotation. The modern department offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals as well as local GP practices. The department is fully UKAS accredited and an IBMS accredited training laboratory.
The successful candidate will regularly rotate through all sections of the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department and will be required to participate in the 24/7 shift system.
The ideal candidate will have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a BMS, have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Haematology) or have equivalent proven experience at Band 6 level in Haematology/Blood Transfusion. Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD) will be expected to be demonstrated at interview. Candidates completing their Specialist Portfolio may be considered however they would start on band 5 if unable to satisfy the Specialist BMS criteria and will be promoted to a Specialist BMS upon completion of the Specialist portfolio.
Responsibilities
* Regularly rotate through all sections of the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department.
* Participate in the 24/7 shift system.
* Work across multiple sites (The Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Essential Services Laboratory) on rotation.
* Contribute to diagnostic testing and automated processes within the department.
* Engage with ongoing training, development and quality assurance activities.
Qualifications
* BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
* Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist (BMS).
* Completed IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Haematology) or equivalent proven experience at Band 6 in Haematology/Blood Transfusion.
* Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD) demonstrated at interview.
* Candidates completing the Specialist Portfolio may be considered, starting at Band 5; promotion to Specialist BMS on portfolio completion.
About the team and environment
The Haematology department is well equipped, including 3 Beckman Coulter DxH 900s, a Starrsed RS ESR analyser, TOSOH G11 for HPLC and 2 Sta R Max coagulation analysers. The clinical Haematology department is internationally renowned as a centre of excellence for chronic blood disorders including chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. The Coagulation department supports a comprehensive haemophilia service and provides a full range of coagulation tests.
The Transfusion department is keen and progressive, contributing to NHSBT pilots and steering groups, including being one of four full sites for the Integrated Stock Management Scheme. Transfusion also offers opportunities to contribute to clinical trials and participates in patient blood management. We are fully automated with Bio-Rad IH500 analysers, electronic issue, Electronic Dispatch Note, Automatic Stock Replenishment and full Haemonetics blood tracking from vein to vein.
Additional information
UHD are investing in services across the Trust, with many being transformed and developed following merger and the New Hospital Programme. This may involve site relocations; recruiting managers will answer any questions at interview. If relocation occurs, mileage reimbursement is not applicable beyond normal commuting distance.
