We have a new opportunity for a Legal Compliance Manager to join our Legal & Governance on a fixed tern basis of 12 months. You will be an experienced compliance professional and a creative and pragmatic problem solver with the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders. You will be able to translate and simplify complex regulatory requirements into effective guidance and optimised processes.
About the role:
You'll work closely with our Senior Legal Compliance Manager to help support the SLCM in developing, implementing, maintaining and managing a broad compliance framework across the organisation.
You'll take the lead on key initiativesin the areas of Data Protection, Access and Benefit Sharing, National Security & Investment, Trusted Research and Anti-Fraud, Bribery and Corruption.
You'll be project managing, collaborating across teams, spotting gaps, influencing decision-making, and helping drive a culture of continuous improvement.
What you'll be doing:
* Project managing and implementing an Institute wide compliance initiative, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to support the design of innovative, pragmatic, risk-based solutions to minimise risk and enable the Institute's strategy.
* Evaluating and assessing the effectiveness and adequacy of internal controls and assurance mechanisms across all areas of the Institute to ensure compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
* Providing support and expert guidance to stakeholders at all levels of the Institute on compliance matters, providing guidance and training in line with risk and demand.
* Monitoring compliance, analysing trends and conducting root cause analysis for systemic compliance issues, and supporting relevant leadership on remedial actions.
* Promoting a culture of compliance and continuous improvement, supporting the development of optimised processes to enable Sanger science and meet ethical and legal requirements.
* Undertaking horizon scanning, conducting assessments and gap analysis for any upcoming regulatory changes, and working with teams to navigate any challenges presented by these changes to minimise the impact to the Sanger's strategy as far as possible.
* Deputising for SLCM where required at forums, meetings and in other circumstances where the SLCM is unavailable.
* Proactively contributing to wider Legal & Governance and organisation activities that contribute to GRL's mission and strategic objectives.
Essential Skills:
* Qualified to degree level (or equivalent).
* Significant knowledge and experience of implementing compliance requirements in a complex organisation, gap and trend analysis and process improvement.
* Excellent written and oral communication as well as reporting skills.
* Excellent attention to details.
* Excellent IT skills, including but not limited to Excel spreadsheet creation and analysis.
* An appreciation of when to recognise risk and ask for advice.
* Ability to work well with a wide range of people (e.g. scientists and academics, other operational professionals and external stakeholders) and develop strong and effective relationships.
* "Can-do" attitude, positive, open-minded with a flexible approach.
* Proven ability to work to deadlines and manage complex processes involving a number of individuals across different functions and institutions.
* Enthusiasm for the Institute's charitable mission in scientific research.
About Us:
The Legal portion of the Legal and Governance (LeGo) team covers both scientific and operational teams. The Legal Team is responsible for drafting and negotiating all agreements related to our activities, including all of our varied research collaborations, projects and materials transfers. The team also has expertise in a host of additional areas, such as providing support on data protection and confidentiality, data release via EDAM and legal queries
Other Information:
* Salary in the region of £53,000 to £64,000
* Flexible hybrid working (min 2 days office based)
