The post-holder is required to provide expert technical and managerial support to the the Nuclear Medicine Department of Velindre NHS Trust with specific regard to radionuclide therapies. The post holder will be a qualified expert practitioner, working within the specialist field of Nuclear Medicine undertaking advanced practice with a high and well defined level of accountability at an advanced clinical level. This implies the use of advanced clinical skills to assess, plan and manage episodes of care, optimising outcomes and resource use. The advanced practitioner is responsible for his / her clinical work and professional development. The practitioner will provide professional leadership and training, will support service development and undertake research and development. The post holder will undertake reflective evaluation of practice, support clinical governance and work as part of a team with other disciplines towards shared objectives.
Main duties of the job
To act as the MRT operational Manager for the nuclear medicine therapy service working in conjunction with the Head of Nuclear Medicine and the lead MRT Scientist.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To practice independently with the appropriate clinical and scientific support.
2. To administer radiopharmaceuticals, including IV, under the direction of the ARSAC licence holders
3. To carry out all aspects of imaging and non-imaging nuclear medicine tests and patient investigations.
4. To participate in advanced evidence based practice.
5. To use advanced clinical judgement to enable independent decision-making.
6. To authorise patient referrals on behalf of the ARSAC licence holders according to documented justification criteria to comply with the IR(ME)R requirements.
7. To participate in the general risk assessments and those specific to radioactivity.
8. Ensure radioactive and other waste is disposed of according to regulations, local rules and procedures. Ensure appropriate records of specialist waste are accurately maintained.
9. To participate in and actively represent the specialty in clinical meetings and within multi-disciplinary teams.
10. To act as one of the departmental appointed Radiation Protection Supervisors.

Person specification
Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Honours degree or equivalent in Physics or Physical Science or equivalent level of experience
* MSc or PhD in Medical Physics or equivalent level of experience
* Evidence of having attended training courses or meetings relating to Nuclear Medicine
* Recognised management qualification at NVQ3 or equivalent
* On Register of Clinical Technologists or HCPC registration.

* Higher level Management and leadership qualifications

* Proven technical knowledge in Nuclear Medicine including relevant legislation and an awareness of new developments.
* Ability to exercise own initiative and make decisions in complex and unpredictable situations.

* Ability to manipulate radioactive materials safely.
* Ability to dispense radiopharmaceuticals.
* Ability to perform intravenous injections.
* Ability to use information technology including entering and extracting data to and from computerised databases.
* Ability to use sophisticated clinical equipment such as gamma cameras.
* Ability to pipette samples.
* Mathematical skills.
* Manual handling of patients and inanimate objects.
* Ability to concentrate when subject to unpredictable working patterns and for long periods of time with frequent interruptions.

* Teaching and training experience as a senior leader
