Metallurgist

Yolk Recruitment is supporting the hire of a Metallurgist for an industrial site in South Wales. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of laboratory operations, improve efficiency, and maximise the extraction of valuable materials from high-capacity furnaces. You will design and refine material recipes, lead a team of chemists and technicians, and work closely with process engineers to implement improvements across the operation. This is a hands-on, strategic role where your expertise directly influences productivity, process performance, and long-term operational results.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and refine material recipes for high-capacity furnaces to maximise extraction yields.
Lead, mentor, and manage laboratory chemists and technicians, overseeing day-to-day lab operations.
Plan, execute, and analyse trials to improve process efficiency and product quality.
Collaborate with process engineers and site management to implement process and technology improvements.
Monitor raw material quality and finished product outputs to optimise yields.
Identify opportunities to reduce waste, minimise dross, and improve slag processing.
Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and operational regulations.
Develop standard operating procedures and best practice guidelines for laboratory processes.
Provide technical guidance to the wider production team on material performance and process adjustments.
Support long-term strategic planning to enhance operational performance and efficiency. What We're Looking For:
Proven experience in metallurgy or materials science.
Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on process optimisation.
Ability to lead a laboratory team while working independently. Package & Benefits:
