We are seeking a dedicated and experienced SEND teacher to join our mainstream setting in the development of a specialist provision, supporting a small group of highly complex children (aged 4 to 8 years) with a combination of autism, SEMH, significant communication needs, and trauma- or attachment-related difficulties. Working in a specialist settings and require an adaptive, nurturing approach to ensure their individual needs are met through a personalised curriculum.
You will be supported by a team of three Teaching Assistants and will be responsible for planning, delivering, assessing a highly individualised curriculum in line with the Assess, Plan, Do, Review (ADPR) cycle. Some pupils will attend this provision full-time, while others attend part-time.
Key Responsibilities
* Work within an adapted, needs-led curriculum tailored to individual EHCPs developmental stages, guided by the ADPR model.
* Use and apply the Autism Education Trust (AET) Framework to inform teaching practice.
* Implement a child-specific curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and responsive to individual needs.
* Create a safe, structured, emotionally attuned classroom environment that supports children's emotional regulation, communication, sensory needs.
* Lead, coach and manage a small team of TAs, ensuring consistency of approach high-quality practice.
* Work collaboratively with families, therapists, the Inclusion Lead, external professionals to provide joined-up, holistic support.
* Monitor assess pupil progress, adjusting provision as needed.
* Contribute to safeguarding, well-being, the wider inclusion ethos of the school.
Essential Requirements
* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
* Proven experience teaching children with autism complex communication needs
* Experience of managing sensory and communication needs.
* Understanding of trauma-informed attachment-aware approaches
* Strong team leadership skills to manage develop a small team of TAs
* Calm, patient and adaptable, with a strong commitment to inclusive, child-centred practice
* Flexibility to support children attending both full and part-time
* Experience in delivering and reviewing EHCP targets and contributing to annual reviews
Desirable Criteria
* Experience in specialist or alternative provision for children with high SEND needs
* Training in Autism Education strategies (e.g., TEACCH, SCERTS, Attention Autism)
* Experience using Total Communication methods/or AAC tools, TACPAC
* Familiarity with:
* PACE and Safer handling strategies for de-escalation
* Sensory Processing needs the use of sensory diets or adapted environments
* Regulation frameworks such as Zones of Regulation Emotion Coaching
* Assessment of learning for children working significantly below age-related expectations
* Trauma-informed practices to support relational safety trust-building
* Strong skills in multi-agency working supporting families under pressure
* Competency in Makaton
* Experience using safeguarding record-keeping systems
