JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS

(NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987

Regulation 5

1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

* (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
* (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where he/she may be required to work.

2) Exercise of particular duties

(a) A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) in a school shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the principal, such particular duties as may be assigned.

(b) A teacher to whom paragraph 1(b) refers shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the board or the principal of any school where he/she may be required to work, such duties as may be assigned.

1. Planning

1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;

1.2 Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;

1.3 Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ development, progress, and attainment.

2. General

2.1 Promoting pupils’ progress and well-being;

2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters;

2.3 Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs;

2.4 Communicating with parents;

2.5 Collaborating with external persons or bodies approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors;

2.6 Participating in relevant meetings.

3. Assessment/Reporting

Providing assessments, reports, and references related to pupils, ensuring confidentiality where necessary.

4. Staff Development/Professional Development

4.1 Participating in staff development schemes;

4.2 Reviewing and improving teaching methods and programmes;

4.3 Assisting in course development, teaching materials, and assessment methods.

5. Discipline/Health and Safety

5.1 Maintaining order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety;

5.2 Participating in school meetings related to curriculum, administration, or pastoral care.

6. Public Examinations

Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, recording, and supervising during exams.

7. Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration

7.1 Contributing to staff appointments, training, and curriculum management;

7.2 Participating in administrative tasks, including supervision and equipment management.

8. Number of days/Hours of work

8.1 Teachers are available for 195 days per year, with specific hours and duties as specified by the school;

8.2 Teachers shall work approximately 1,265 hours annually, excluding travel and preparation;

8.3 Weekly teaching hours are limited to 25 hours in primary and special schools, and 23.5 hours in secondary schools;

8.4 Teachers are not required to undertake midday supervision unless employed specifically for that role;

8.5 Teachers are entitled to at least a 30-minute break between 12 noon and 2 pm, or 2:30 pm in nursery settings.

9. Staff cover

Supervising pupils in the absence of their teacher, with certain limitations based on school size and teacher absence duration.

This job description is subject to review and may include other duties of similar nature. The post-holder is expected to promote equality and good relations, complying with relevant legislation.

Additional Duties – Music Technology

Teaching Allowance: Main Pay Scale + TA1 (additional allowances may be payable).

The successful candidate will lead Music Technology lessons, develop a vision aligned with the school’s goals, support staff, promote safe practice, and enhance student engagement through innovative use of music software and technology. Responsibilities include supporting school productions, providing technical support, and fostering wellbeing among staff and pupils.

This description is flexible to changing circumstances and other duties may be assigned.
