About the Role:
This role focus is to provide high-quality, child-focused social work services to children, families, and carers in the Adoption & Kinship Team. The role will involve assessing and supporting prospective adopters and kinship carers, ensuring that children’s needs are met through safe, stable, and nurturing placements.
The Social Worker will work collaboratively with children, families, and partner agencies to secure the best outcomes, in line with legislative and procedural requirements such as the Children Act 1989, Adoption and Children Act 2002, and Fostering Services Regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct comprehensive assessments of prospective adopters and kinship carers, using evidence-based tools and frameworks.
* Prepare detailed reports, including Prospective Adopter Reports (PARs) and Special Guardianship Orders (SGOs), ensuring thorough analysis and recommendations.
* Support adoptive and kinship families through their journey, providing tailored advice, guidance, and training to meet the child’s needs.
* Work closely with children to understand their wishes and feelings, incorporating their views into care and placement plans.
* Match children with appropriate adopters or kinship carers, ensuring their emotional, developmental, and cultural needs are met.
* Collaborate with children’s social workers to create robust life story work and later-life letters.
* Ensure the safety and welfare of children by identifying and managing risks in line with safeguarding policies and procedures.
* Respond promptly to safeguarding concerns, working collaboratively with multi-agency partners to mitigate risks.
* Liaise with health, education, and legal professionals to support children and families effectively.
* Represent the service in court proceedings, preparing high-quality statements and giving evidence as required.
* Participate in adoption panels and kinship care meetings, presenting assessments and contributing to decision-making processes.
* Maintain accurate, timely, and high-quality case records in line with statutory requirements and organisational standards.
* Ensure all work complies with legislative frameworks, including the Adoption and Children Act 2002, Special Guardianship Guidance, and local authority policies.
* Actively contribute to team development, sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues through mentoring or supervision as needed.
* Participate in training and continuous professional development to maintain and enhance skills.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
* Degree in Social Work (or equivalent) from a UK university.
* Registration with Social Work England.
* Post-qualification experience working within children’s services, ideally in a safeguarding, assessment, or referral role.
* Strong understanding of safeguarding legislation and statutory guidance, including the Children Act, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and local authority safeguarding procedures.
* Experience working in a multi-agency setting, with the ability to gather and analyse information from different sources to inform decision-making.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, families, and professionals.
* Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions in a high-stakes environment.
* Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess risk and make informed decisions about child protection.
