Anaesthesia Consultant – General & Regional Anaesthesia
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is recruiting an Anaesthesia Consultant to deliver high‑quality anaesthetic care across adult general theatres and related specialties. The successful candidate will work within adult general theatres, lead on the adult general on‑call rota, and specialise in both major general surgery and regional anaesthesia. This role offers flexibility, a supportive work‑life balance and opportunities for teaching, research and service improvement.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide expert anaesthesia for general surgery, major trauma, obstetrics, neurosurgery, cardiac, thoracic, paediatric and other adult procedures.
* Lead and support the adult general on‑call rota, including first‑on‑call and second‑on‑call duties, maintaining within 30‑45 minutes’ travel time.
* Engage in teaching and training – mentor junior doctors, deliver lectures, support undergraduate and postgraduate education.
* Contribute to continuous professional development, quality improvement and safety initiatives.
* Develop and agree a personalised job plan with the Service Line Director, allowing flexibility and focus on preferred working patterns.
Essential Qualifications
* CCT or CESR in Anaesthesia (or expected within 6 months).
* Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
* Broad, current clinical experience of adult anaesthesia.
* Advanced module or SIA in major general/HPB surgery.
* Advanced module in regional anaesthesia.
Desirable Qualifications
* Interest in safety, quality or governance.
* Additional postgraduate qualification (BSc, MSc or PhD).
* Evidence of positive patient & colleague feedback.
* Experience managing complex cases.
* Distinction, scholarships or prizes.
* Evidence of skills in service improvement, research, medical education or leadership.

* Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 per annum (Hospital medical and dental staff).
* Contract: Permanent.
