Job overview

A Children’s Nurse in a busy Emergency Department provides safe, timely and child‑centred care to babies, children and young people presenting with acute illness, injury or safeguarding concerns. The role requires rapid assessment, clinical decision‑making and effective triage to prioritise care according to clinical need.

The post holder monitors and interprets vital signs, recognises deterioration, administers prescribed treatments and supports emergency procedures, including trauma and resuscitation. Working in a fast‑paced and unpredictable environment, the Children’s Nurse must manage competing priorities, adapt quickly to changing situations and remain calm and professional under pressure.

Effective communication with children, families and the multidisciplinary team is essential, particularly during stressful or emotional situations. Safeguarding responsibilities are integral to the role, alongside accurate documentation and adherence to the NMC Code and local policies.

The Children’s Nurse contributes to maintaining patient safety, service quality and a supportive learning environment for colleagues and students.

Main duties of the job

* Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges in paediatric emergency care.
* Participate in health promotion to care for the children of our community.
* Continuous responsibility for the delivery of care needs and maintenance of clinical standards on the ward/dept.
* Provide support to all grades of staff, planning and directing activities to provide the optimal standard of care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence‑based, holistic family‑centred care with the multidisciplinary team for children and young people.
* Act as an advocate on behalf of children and their families.
* Ensure the ward/dept is clean and provides a safe environment for children, parents and staff.
* Gain competencies, knowledge, skills and experience in the ED to progress to leadership level.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals – Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal – as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant‑led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non‑life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
