This is a key leadership role within an agile, innovation-led organisation at the forefront of green technology. Insensys plays a vital role in enabling smarter, cleaner energy infrastructure, and this appointment represents an exciting opportunity to shape the next generation of their products and technologies.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Executive Team, the Engineering Director will lead a multidisciplinary engineering department of 15+ specialists, spanning interrogator design, sensor development, applications, and customer service. This role blends hands-on technical input, particularly in electronics and firmware, with high-level strategic direction and people leadership.
You will provide technical leadership in the architecture and development of next-generation fibre optic measurement systems, support verification and qualification activities, and drive product development forward through clear design specifications and planning. You will also play a pivotal role on the senior leadership team, helping to steer overall business strategy and innovation.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
* Represent Engineering on the wider leadership team
* Provide technical direction and leadership with particular focus on electronics and firmware to support the development of the next generation of fibre optic measurement systems through a combination of hands-on engineering and guidance of others.
* Hands-on engineering will likely include defining and decision making around electronics and firmware architectures and assisting the wider team to implement those designs.
* Develop requirements from technical specialists, internal customers and external customers and create product design specifications
* Determine the plans for, and analyse results from, verification and qualification activities
* Lead technical and strategic decision making with specific emphasis on electronics and firmware
Education, Skills & Experience
* Demonstrable team leadership and people development experience for an engineering team of at least 15 people.
* Masters Degree (or higher) in Electronics Engineering, or a related field e.g. Physics
* 15+ years’ experience in optoelectronic product development, including technical guidance to other engineers
* Demonstrable experience of input or influence on product/system architecture and/or technical roadmap strategies
* Hands-on and logical approach to problem-solving, good attention to detail
* Experience of FPGA (Verilog), C, C++ programming
* Excellent organisational skills
* A thorough and methodological approach to work
* Ability to be agile when reacting to a changing landscape
* Concise communicator
* A proven team player able to operate as part of a wider senior leadership team
