Job Description
Join the Fusion and Modular Nuclear Business Unit! Assystem is expanding its Stress capability and seeks a Stress Engineer to contribute to essential projects within the nuclear sector. In this role you will apply FEA expertise to perform detailed assessments of nuclear components, ensuring compliance with design codes such as ASME III and RCC‑M. You will be involved in project planning, delivery, and reporting, and will communicate regularly with internal and external stakeholders, including client technical leads. This role offers the opportunity to work both within client teams and from our Assystem offices, providing a variety of project experiences.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and apply work practices for computing, analysing, and reporting stress analysis.
* Plan, undertake and report simulation and assessment projects using tools such as ANSYS or Abaqus FEA software and calculations using MathCAD.
* Use engineering and data management software such as document control, Product Lifecycle Management, MS Office and Teams.
* Collaborate with peers, communicate clearly, and work independently when required.
* Deliver milestones and produce high‑quality outputs within time and cost budgets.
* Understand the commercial context of project delivery, including requirement compliance, change and technical risk.
* Organise and plan work effectively, demonstrating excellent communication skills.
* Write high‑quality, clear, concise and accurate technical reports.
Qualifications
Essential
* Nuclear industry experience (defence) preferable; transferable skills from other disciplines accepted.
* Demonstrable expertise in fatigue, fracture, thermal and structural stress assessments using FEA.
* Finite Element analysis in ABAQUS (explicit/implicit).
* ABAQUS/CAE or equivalent (desirable).
* Code assessment to ASME B&PVC and R6; RCC‑M a plus.
* Knowledge of structural integrity & defect tolerance assessments.
* Python scripting in ABAQUS environment desirable.
* CRACKEN or alternative fracture assessment experience highly desirable.
* Fatigue crack growth & initiation experience desirable.
* Familiar with gated review process.
Desirable / Preferred
* Previous experience in similar roles in the nuclear or fusion industry.
* Hands‑on 3D modelling in CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor, Catia or SolidWorks.
* Experience of fluid‑modelling such as CFD, or dynamic modelling such as LS‑Dyn or Radioss.

Additional Requirements
* BPSS and SC required.
* Ability to travel to Assystem offices and customer sites within the UK.
* Will undertake work packages supporting major UK and international nuclear clients.
Applicants will be required to meet residency criteria to obtain a minimum level of UK security clearance if not already cleared to a minimum SC level.
