Overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly and supportive team at Haslemere Health Centre. This role will initially focus on administrative duties with remote patient contact, and offers the opportunity to develop into a more patient‑facing position supporting long‑term condition management and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Main duties of the job

The Pharmacy Technician will support the multidisciplinary team in delivering safe and effective medicines management. Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate patient medication records, processing and generating prescriptions, reconciling medicines following hospital discharge, acting as a point of contact for medication queries, liaising with healthcare professionals across care settings, and supporting adherence to prescribing policies and regulatory requirements.

The role also involves contributing to audits, monitoring medicines use, supporting quality and performance targets, and promoting cost‑effective prescribing in line with local formularies.

About us

Haslemere Health Centre is a large, friendly, and enthusiastic GP practice set in the beautiful Surrey Hills. Our multidisciplinary team includes GP Partners, Salaried GPs, Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technicians, Physiotherapist, social prescriber, and visiting paramedic.

We are a training practice, regularly hosting GP registrars and FY2 doctors. Two of our GPs also run the local GP registrar training scheme.

Our main site is a modern single‑storey NHS Health Centre on the grounds of Haslemere Hospital, with 20 consulting rooms, a branch surgery in Fernhurst, and dedicated admin space within the hospital.

Job responsibilities

The Pharmacy Technician will play a key role in supporting the safe, effective, and efficient management of medicines within the practice as part of the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining accurate patient medication records, processing and generating prescriptions, and reconciling medicines following hospital discharge or outpatient appointments.

The role involves acting as a central point of contact for prescription‑related queries from patients and healthcare professionals, and liaising with colleagues across primary, community, and secondary care to ensure continuity of care. The Pharmacy Technician will support the implementation and monitoring of repeat prescribing systems, medicines optimisation processes, and regulatory requirements.

In addition, the post holder will contribute to clinical audits, support quality improvement initiatives, and promote cost‑effective prescribing in line with local and national guidance. Although primarily administrative with remote patient contact, the role offers the opportunity to develop into a more patient‑facing position supporting long‑term condition management and preventative care.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

* Update and maintain accurate patient medication records on the practice’s clinical computer systems, including advice given and action taken.
* Advise the primary health care team on the safe and secure handling of controlled drugs and other medicines, ensuring compliance with medicines legislation.
* Generate prescriptions from requests from patients.
* Reconcile medicines from outpatient and discharge letters.
* Liaise with hospital, community and primary care colleagues to ensure correct medicines are continued following transfer of care.
* Support practice staff to deliver on the CQC inspections, MRHA alerts, DES contract, QIPP agenda, QOF and locally commissioned enhanced services.
* Act as the point of contact for the practice for prescription‑related queries for healthcare professionals and patients.
* Implement and monitor the practice’s adherence to a repeat prescription policy.
* Conduct clinical audits as part of the multidisciplinary team.

Person Specification

Qualifications

* The post holder must hold an NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services (or equivalent) and be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
* It is desirable for candidates to have completed the CPPE Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway.

Experience

* Candidates should have experience of medicines management, including prescribing processes or pharmacy services, and experience using clinical IT systems such as EMIS or Docman (or similar systems).
* Previous experience in a GP practice or primary care setting is desirable, along with a minimum of two years post‑qualification experience.

Knowledge and Skills

* Demonstrate a sound understanding of the safe and effective use of medicines and medicines optimisation principles. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, along with good computer literacy and attention to detail. The ability to prioritise workload, work independently within protocols, and manage competing demands is required.
* Knowledge of local formularies and cost‑effective prescribing would be advantageous.

Personal Attributes

* Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate a proactive approach to problem‑solving, escalating issues appropriately when necessary. Show professionalism, with a clear understanding of confidentiality and ethical responsibilities. Flexibility and adaptability to meet changing service needs are essential.

Other Requirements

* Demonstrate a strong commitment to high‑quality patient care and safety. An interest in supporting patients with long‑term conditions is desirable. Commit to continuous professional development and willingness to develop the role further, including becoming more patient‑facing as the service evolves.
