Job Overview

The GI department comprises of 8 (7.5 WTE) colorectal (including one clinical academic with a second appointment in progress) and 7 WTE upper GI surgeons. The team is part of the rota providing 24-hour emergency surgical care at North Bristol NHS Trust. The postholder will manage trauma cases when doing emergency general surgery on-call.

The emergency general surgical take has evolved over the past decade in both volume and complexity and the proportion of the colorectal surgical workload presenting and managed acutely has increased significantly. The gastrointestinal surgery team at NBT provide a subspecialist upper and lower GI take.

This post is to replace an existing post to appoint a robotic cancer surgeon who is to join the current team in rectal cancer resections, in addition to complex pelvic/exenterative surgery. The job plan has a fixed pattern over a 12-week period and will be subject to review at 12 months. When on call, the on-call consultant is responsible for reviewing patients in same day emergency care (SDEC) and acute admissions from 1pm. They are required to stay until 7pm.Consultants do an evening ward round on the day they are on call and a post take ward round at 08:00 the following day. On the day after on call, the consultant is responsible for the CEPOD list. The post holder will have no elective commitments when on-call.

Main duties of the job

In an elective week, the post holder will usually work 3 fixed days including operating sessions and endoscopy. There is allocated time to attend the colorectal MDT and for administration and supporting professional activities. The postholder will perform cancer resections as well as benign resections and minor anorectal procedures. The colorectal surgeons work as a single team and consultant ward rounds of all elective and emergency patients are timetabled every day. We have MDTs for colorectal cancer, abdominal sarcoma pelvic exenteration, complex polyps, pelvic floor and inflammatory bowel disease. It is an essential criterion that the postholder can work as part of a large team and that they can demonstrate good relations with colleagues and patients.

The job plan includes elective clinic, endoscopy and operating lists delivered when not on call (approximately 9 weeks out of 12). On call is provided as 2 separate weeks in a 12-week cycle where the on-call consultant is also consultant of the week providing ward cover. In an on-call week the postholder is on call either Wednesday and Friday night or Thursday night. There is a separate weekend on call Saturday morning until 5pm Monday. On call shifts comprise SDEC from 1-5 and then on call overnight with an all-day CEPOD list the following day.
