Overview
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the provision of compassionate, safe and high-quality care delivery of all patients in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards. A Medical Day Case Unit provides planned treatments and procedures that avoid overnight hospital stays and manages patients needing regular care such as ascitic drain infusions for liver disease, high-volume IBD treatments (biologic infusions, IV steroids, or iron), and venesection clinics for conditions like haemochromatosis or polycythemia vera. This helps deliver safe, specialist-led care, reduces hospital admissions, and supports patients with chronic conditions efficiently in an outpatient setting.
Important note: This is a full-time, permanent role based at Stockport Stepping Hill, Stockport.
Responsibilities
* In conjunction with the Divisional Nurse Director and Matron (NS), provide effective leadership, monitor professional and care standards, and ensure efficient use of resources at ward/department level.
* Be a visible and accessible presence in the clinical area for patients, relatives, and staff.
* Lead by example and promote compassionate, safe and high-quality patient care; support own professional development.
* Provide leadership that promotes patient-focused care and contribute to business group developments with a focus on clinical effectiveness and innovative practice.
* Manage roster allocation for present and future shifts to ensure safe staffing levels in line with the workforce model.
* Lead the multidisciplinary team daily, using resources effectively and efficiently.
* Escalate patient safety, quality, and experience concerns in a timely manner, offering solutions and evidence-based recommendations.
* Participate in on-site cover rota and assist with professional issues, staff redeployment, and liaison with relevant teams as required.
* Maintain responsibility for effective care management, prioritising workload and ensuring individualised plans of care are formulated and implemented (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation).
* Encourage and acknowledge patient and carer contributions; ensure safeguarding policies for children and adults at risk are followed by staff.
* Respond to changes in a patient’s condition and involve appropriate colleagues as needed.
* Act as an advocate for patients and their families, promoting equality, inclusion, privacy and rights.
* Participate in investigation/management of incidents or complaints as required and maintain effective communication with multidisciplinary teams.
* Ensure nursing documentation is appropriate, accountable, and defensible.
* Adhere to Trust safeguarding commitments and policies; enhanced DBS check may be required (costs apply).
