The successful candidate will design, develop, and maintain software components written primarily in Rust, while also contributing to wider engineering decisions, technical direction, and best practice.Responsibilities will include:Designing, developing, testing, and maintaining production-quality software in RustBuilding secure, scalable, and memory-safe software components for operationally critical systemsContributing to system architecture and selecting appropriate Rust-based frameworks and design patternsActing as a technical point of contact for Rust-related engineering decisions within the teamWorking with asynchronous Rust and networked services in high-performance environmentsProducing clean, maintainable, well-tested code with a strong focus on reliability and securityParticipating in code reviews and helping drive engineering quality across the wider software teamMentoring junior and mid-level engineers, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous improvementWorking closely with architects, product owners, DevSecOps, cloud, and security engineering teamsProducing technical documentation including design specifications, API documentation, and operational runbooksParticipating in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and backlog refinementCommunicating technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders where requiredKey skills Strong commercial experience as a Software Engineer, Rust Engineer, or Backend / Systems Software EngineerStrong commercial experience developing production software in RustStrong understanding of Rust ownership, borrowing, lifetimes, and concurrency primitivesExperience with asynchronous Rust such as Tokio or async-stdProficiency with Rust tooling including Cargo, Clippy, Rustfmt, and the wider crate ecosystemSolid understanding of software engineering fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and systems designExperience with version control, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testingStrong communication and collaboration skillsBritish citizenship and ability to obtain MOD SC clearanceDesired skills Existing SC clearanceExperience working in defence, secure technology, or other highly regulated environmentsKnowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS or AzureExperience with Infrastructure as Code, for example TerraformFamiliarity with containerisation such as Docker and orchestration platforms such as KubernetesUnderstanding of zero-trust architectures, mTLS, and PKIExperience with cross-language FFI such as Rust / C / C++Exposure to embedded, low-level, or systems-level Rust developmentExperience building secure networked services or communications-focused platformsPlease note: existing SC clearance is advantageous but not essential.
