Job Overview
An experienced and committed optometrist is required to join our team on a full-time or part-time basis.
Optometrists at NUH work closely with colleagues within multi-disciplinary team and are extensively involved in a range of extended roles, including Keratoconus, Cataract, Eye casualty, PCO same day assessment and treatment service, Glaucoma, Macula and, Diabetic clinics.
The job plan for the successful candidate will be aligned to both service need and previous clinical experience.
This role provides the opportunity to enrol for an Advanced Clinical Practice Ophthalmology level 7 apprenticeship with supported clinical experience. The role is suitable for optometrists with previous post-registration hospital experience, for a candidate with less experience starting at band 6 with progression through to band 7. The successful candidate will be supported in their development, the Ophthalmology department also supports the achievement of Independent prescribing qualification.
Main duties of the job
Specialist Optometrists at NUH provide a wide range of core clinical services and, with support of the Consultant Ophthalmologists, Optometrists are extensively involved in a range of extended roles, including Cataract, Eye casualty, PCO same day assessment and treatment service, Glaucoma, Keratoconus, Macula and, Diabetic hospital and screening clinics
If you are an enthusiastic, highly motivated optometrist, with good communication skills and the ability to be adaptable to the changing needs of the department, this role is an opportunity to work in a large teaching hospital with a varied caseload and will include participation in both core and a selection of extended role ophthalmology clinics in line with the apprenticeship programme.
The Optometry Department has a significant role in the training of pre-registration optometrists, post graduate medics, orthoptic students and other health professionals and the successful candidate would be required to contribute to this clinical teaching role.

The post holder will be based in the Optometry Department at Queens Medical Centre Campus.
To work clinically to deliver a comprehensive range of core optometric services and a range of extended services to the highest standards of quality and care.
To work as an autonomous practitioner in providing optometric assessment, diagnosis and management of patients of all ages, ranging from pre-term babies to the elderly and who have varying communication skills.
To participate in the delivery of a range of complex specialist (extended role) optometric services that meet the changing needs of the service.
To work as an independent practitioner whilst being a source of clinical expertise for junior staff in the assessment / practice of these clinical specialties.
To undertake specific administrative duties as agreed with the Clinical lead for Optometry.

Essential criteria
Registration as Optometrist with General Optical Council
Membership of College of Optometrists
Desirable criteria
IP qualification or desire to achieve
City and Guilds or HSD in diabetic retinopathy screening
Experience
Essential criteria
Previous hospital experience working in a band 6 or band 7 role or equivalent high street experience as an Optometrist.
Experience in clinical audit
Experience supervising trainee or junior optometrists
Desirable criteria
Previous clinical experience including a range from clinics in refraction, macula, diabetic, low vision, contact lens, glaucoma, cataract.
