Job Summary
University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a dedicated sonographer to join our dynamic radiology department. The role involves performing and reporting ultrasound examinations across multiple sites – Poole, Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, and community diagnostic centres. Experienced in general medical, obstetrics, gynaecology, vascular, paediatrics (including neonatal hips and heads) and musculoskeletal ultrasound, you will work independently and as part of a supportive team that delivers 7‑day ultrasound service.
Responsibilities
* Perform and report ultrasound examinations in all areas of the department, including obstetrics, gynaecology, general abdominal, vascular and paediatric services.
* Maintain high standards of patient care and safety, using ergonomic equipment and regular consultation with the Occupational Health MSK Physiotherapy team.
* Engage in CPD and support staff training, audits and MSc‑level learning opportunities.
* Manage ultrasound lists, ensuring safe practice and timely reporting.
* Assist in the delivery of early pregnancy clinics and one‑stop clinics.
Qualifications
Essential:
* Diploqaute of College of Radiographers or BSc. Radiography (or equivalent)
* HCPC Registration
* Postgraduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound
Desirable:
* Current FMF nuchal translucency accreditation
Experience
Essential:
* Postgraduate experience in ultrasound
* Ability to work independently across all ultrasound areas
* Evidence of continual professional development
* Recent NHS experience
Desirable:
* Experience supervising, teaching and mentoring staff of all grades
* Experience in MSK, LATP Biopsy, vascular and paediatric ultrasound (including neonatal hips and heads)
Technical Skills
* Autonomous practitioner with strong time‑management and prioritisation skills
* Ability to analyse and interpret complex information to produce accurate, concise clinical reports
* Excellent communication and counselling skills with a compassionate patient care attitude
* Team worker who supports colleagues and contributes to continuous improvement
Benefits and Working Conditions
The role is full‑time across all sites (part‑time and flexible working may be considered). Band 7 or 8a sonographers receive a Recruitment and Retention Premia payment of £5,000 per annum pro rata. A generous relocation package of up to £13,000 is available. UKAS accreditation (BS70000) and a supportive ergonomic environment are standard.
