Senior Building Management Systems Control Engineer
At WSP, we build smart buildings and deliver industry‑leading HVAC control designs for a variety of high‑rise towers, data centres and healthcare projects across the UK.
Responsibilities
- Work with clients to develop and engineer industry‑leading HVAC control designs, responding to the design for performance imperative.
- Coordinate the delivery of HVAC controls, such as motor control panel design & production, software configuration, graphic packages and installation and commissioning scope detail.
- Apply controls engineering expertise to improve mechanical and electrical building system designs.
- Engage with wider design teams across multidisciplinary projects to advocate for and achieve desired BMS & smart‑building outcomes that are outside of our direct design responsibility.
- Lead systems integration design activities across building services systems.
Qualifications
- Strategic BMS Controls engineering experience with strong understanding of BMS software and best practice.
- Experience delivering HVAC description of operations and sequences of operations.
- Consulting experience, RIBA stages, multidisciplinary collaboration, and ability to lead projects.
- Mechanical Engineering background; welcomes Controls focused MEP engineers.
- Applied industry experience in control and automation at technician/engineer level in critical and secure environments.
- Detailed knowledge of major manufacturers and systems (e.g., Tridium Niagara, Schneider, Siemens, Honeywell, Trend, Delta Controls).
- Ability to design and specify implementation of technologies, documenting formal requirements for approval and development, and roadmaps to implementation.
- Coordination of subcontractors and internal resources to develop & integrate BMS sub‑disciplines and deliver full BMS system solutions, including master system integrator contractors.
- Awareness of HVAC technology trends and market direction in reducing energy consumption.
- Deliver controls and building performance related advice and develop technical documentation.
- Develop design & engineering requirements of building control systems for a varied range of small to very large buildings, varying in complexity.
- Produce detailed performance specifications for the discipline subject to review by colleagues prior to issue.
- Ability to design control systems to integrate with cloud analytics, consider device naming, and points naming standards, cyber‑security and network connectivity implications.
- Awareness of smart building technology trends including standardisation of device and point naming (BDNS initiative).
- Understanding of specialist building systems including fire safety, lighting, security, ICT infrastructure and cloud connectivity aspects of deploying modern smart buildings.
- Awareness of Post‑Occupancy Evaluation and Design for Performance initiatives such as NABERS UK.
- Aware of relevant industry accredited certifications such as WELL, LEED, BREEAM SmartScore, WiredScore.
- Report writing and specification writing skills.
- Completion of the three BCIA technical training modules: Fundamentals of HVAC & Building Technology (BCM01), Measuring & Control Technology (BCM02), Hydraulics in Building Services (BCM03).
- Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) / Engineering Council accredited or specific experience that will lead to Chartership.
