We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday.

The Microbiology Technical Services Manager post is responsible for the technical delivery of a high quality Microbiology service and for making the best use of all resources including staff, equipment and consumables, in an environment that is safe and conducive with best working practices. The post holder will be a key participant and activist in the provision and development of the service.

Applicants must be registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist and hold an MSc Biomedical Science educational qualification or hold the Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (F.I.B.M.S.) or have an equivalent educational qualification. As well as gaining further specialist knowledge the post holder should possess extensive management training and experience including experience in a Laboratory Management post or equivalent.

The post holder must possess extensive scientific/technical knowledge of and experience in Clinical Diagnostic Microbiology. Demonstrate quality leadership with good planning and organisational skills and demonstrate high level of competence in meeting deadlines, problem solving and prioritising workloads. The post holder will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and advanced I.T. skills including expertise in Microsoft Office to manipulate information/data and produce reports and statistical analysis. The post holder will also be required to act as Professional lead for all Biomedical Scientists and related Health Care Science staff, including staff recruitment, staff supervision, change management and performance appraisal.

The GG&C Microbiology service consists of two Laboratory Departments at Glasgow Royal Infirmary (New Lister Building, Level 4) and at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (Lab Medicine Building, Level 4). The post holder develops, implements and monitors policies for the service and additionally is often required to interpret Board or National policies and to provide expert advice in the Microbiology context and public health environment.

The post is based at the Microbiology Laboratory, Glasgow Royal Infirmary and includes the frequent requirement to work at the Microbiology Laboratory, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, as required for service delivery. Both Microbiology Departments comprise of state of the art facilities which contains extensive microbiology equipment such as Vitek 2, Vitek MS, Virtuo, WASPLab and MGiT TB Analysers. In excess of 800,000 samples per annum are processed in the laboratories across the two sites which are staffed by medical staff, healthcare scientists, clinical support workers and administration staff. As well as the routine Microbiology laboratory work, the GG&C Microbiology service also contains many specialist areas of interest. This includes paediatric & cystic fibrosis microbiology at QEUH & environmental microbiology testing (air and water), mycology microscopy and culture & fungal biomarker testing at GRI Microbiology.

The GG&C Microbiology budget for both laboratory sites for 2024/25 is in excess of £16 million. The GG&C Microbiology service holds UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189 standards as a combined, single UKAS number across both the GRI & QEUH sites. UKAS accreditation to ISO 17025 standards is also held for the GRI Microbiology Environmental Laboratory. The post holder will be responsible together with the Quality & Compliance Manager and the Senior Microbiology Management team to ensure that UKAS accreditation to both standards is maintained.
