About the Role
Our client is a well-established international player in the chemical manufacturing and processing industry is seeking an experienced Process Safety Manager to lead all aspects of process safety, health & safety, and engineering reliability at a major UK production site.
This position is ideal for an accomplished professional ready to take the next step into leadership in combining process safety management, environmental compliance, and engineering governance to ensure a safe, efficient, and compliant operation.
Key Responsibilities
Process Safety Leadership
* Lead the development and implementation of the site’s Process Safety Management System (PSMS) in line with UK legal standards and ISO frameworks (ISO 45001 / 14001).
* Oversee HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, SIL and related risk assessments, ensuring compliance with industry best practice.
* Drive Management of Change (MOC) processes across plant, process, and personnel.
* Act as site lead for DSEAR/ATEX implementation and continuous improvement.
* Partner with leadership and HSE teams to ensure regulatory compliance, proactive risk mitigation, and audit readiness.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
* Promote a zero-incident culture through strong engagement with all departments and continuous training.
* Own site risk assessments, safety procedures, and SOP governance.
* Manage the Permit-to-Work (PTW) and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) systems.
* Conduct root-cause analyses (RCA) and drive Corrective & Preventive Actions (CAPA) to completion.
* Lead environmental and sustainability initiatives across the site.
Engineering & Maintenance
* Manage the engineering and maintenance functions, ensuring reliability and integrity of plant assets.
* Lead preventive maintenance (PPM) strategies using CMMS systems.
* Report on maintenance KPIs and oversee contractor safety and compliance.
* Embed a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the technical team.
Ideal Requirements
Essential:
* NEBOSH Diploma (or NVQ Level 6) with GradIOSH/CMIOSH status.
* Proven leadership in process safety, HSE, and maintenance within a high-hazard or regulated environment.
* Strong understanding of DSEAR, COMAH, and engineering best practice.
* Skilled in HAZOP, LOPA, ATEX zoning, relief systems, and permit control.
* Demonstrated experience managing audits and implementing ISO systems.
Desirable:
* Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Process, or Mechanical Engineering.
* Chartered or working toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
* CompEx (Ex14 or Ex12) and/or APMP Project Management Certification.
* Experience within Upper- or Lower-Tier COMAH sites.
