Job Description:
Our client, a large public sector organization based in Dungannon, is looking for a Veterinary Officer to join their team.
Duration: 6 months with possible extension
Rate of pay: £29.55 per hour (Saturday rate £40.25; Sunday rate £53.66)
Location: Dungannon
Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week, typically Monday to Friday. The role involves participating in weekly Veterinary Officer on-call rotas, covering weekends and evenings, with an on-call allowance. Out-of-hours work may be required in case of disease outbreaks, paid according to the NICS HR Handbook.
Main Duties:
As a Field Veterinary Officer, you will be the first point of contact for farmers, private veterinary surgeons, and industry stakeholders, providing veterinary leadership at a local level. Responsibilities include:
* Managing and auditing disease control programmes for endemic and high-risk diseases.
* Ensuring compliance with animal welfare standards and traceability through inspections and enforcement.
* Supporting trade facilitation by ensuring animals and products meet export requirements.
* Providing veterinary expertise across various specialisms such as pigs, sheep, and aquatics.
* Offering relief cover for Official Veterinary roles at ports and meat processing facilities.
This role requires strong leadership, decision-making, and collaboration skills to ensure Northern Ireland’s agricultural sector remains resilient, compliant, and competitive.
Eligibility Criteria:
* Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS/FRCVS)
* OR eligible to seek membership of the RCVS; registration must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained during employment.
Applicants should have at least two years of post-graduation experience working with farmed animals or in veterinary public health.
Travel:
The role involves travel across Northern Ireland, the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and possibly other locations. Applicants must have access to suitable transport to meet the demands of the role, including remote areas.
Medical:
Initial tuberculosis assessment required unless immunity is already established.
Note: Successful candidates will be required to start once vetting paperwork and ANI are completed.
