The Engineering Manager will be accountable and responsible for all of the design and engineering activities (all disciplines) within their designated sector, with coordination from the sector lead (Head of Sector/Sector Director) and the Project Managers for each project. The role will include being the functional leader for Engineers and Designers, both for internal resource and the supply chain, through a matrix style organisation chart in direct collaboration with their line managers, the heads of discipline engineering. As part of the role they shall support work winning, estimating, procurement, construction and commissioning activities for the projects within their sector. The role holder will act as the sector specific delegated technical expert and work with the heads of discipline engineering to resolve any technical issues. The role will also be responsible for the leadership and mentoring of graduates within the sector as well as the application of VVB’s CORE values in their day-to-day duties.
Key Responsibilities
* Providing leadership in all facets of engineering and design activities within their sector, to deliver the projects to meet cost, time and quality requirements.
* Ensures that all projects are in compliance with VVB’s Design Management and Assurance Procedures and Quality Management System.
* Ensures design reviews are carried out in-line with current standards to ensure buildability and constructability. That any weaknesses or errors are identified in the design that could jeopardise the functionality and ensures HSE best practices are always followed.
* Developing and managing effective communication and liaison with all relevant internal and external stakeholders to ensure that requirements are identified, assessed, and appropriately integrated into the project.
* Overseeing that the highest standards of health and safety are considered as a priority through all stages of the project.
* Ensure that value engineering is considered at the beginning of each engineering and design stage to explore opportunities to reduce costs but increase functionality to increase the value of a design in coordination with Project Manager and the Client.
* Prepares or oversees the preparation of engineering hour estimates and programmes in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
* Carries out pro-active inspections/audits of projects to ensure compliance with the VVB and project requirements. Hold project personnel to account to resolve non-conformances/issues found.
* Manages engineer allocations and requirements within the sector to meet programme/schedule dates and demobilisations.
* Ensures all design registers, design management & assurance plans, meeting minutes, drawing registers etc., in-line with VVB procedures and project requirements are produced by the project teams.
* Ensure all formal communication is undertaken and managed (RFI’s, TQ’s, EWN’s, MAR’s etc).
* Ensure designers risk registers are suitable and sufficient.
* Carries out CAT 1 or 2 design checks.
* Acts as the Design Manager on smaller projects as required.
* Carries out peer level review of design projects from other sectors.
* Working with the Commercial Teams to track design change and variances.
* Driving the procurement of services and works required to deliver the project.
* Working with the Planning department to plan the project stages; design, installation, and T&C works. Provision of accurate assessment on forecast works (resource, time and cost) to complete and provide suitable readjustments to ensure project programme is maintained. Ensure the implementation and performance accordingly.
* Attendance at FAT and SAT (where required) to ensure compliance with requirements.

Essential Qualifications
* A recognised degree in Engineering discipline from a university accredited by a UK Engineering Institution e.g. IET, IMechE etc.
* Professional Registration, i.e., Engineering Council Registration with Chartership status.
* Professional Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution e.g. IET, IMechE, IFE, CIBSE etc.
* HSE training (SMSTS or IOSH Managing Safely).
* CSCS Card – AQP or PQP min.
* Full UK driver license and use of own car.
