At Burnley General Teaching Hospital, Patient Services Assistants (PSAs) support every in‑patient during their stay with general cleaning and ensure specialist cleaning activities are delivered in a timely manner. You will see patients throughout their hospital journey, providing a rewarding and challenging experience.
Main duties of the job
At the heart of the hospital, the Patient Services team ensures the environment is safe, clean, infection‑free and that patients are transported safely to their required locations. The PSA role merges traditional domestic and porter duties to deliver an efficient service.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Undertake general cleaning duties – wards, clinics, toilets, offices, public areas within your zone.
* Undertake deep cleans in your area.
* Clear up and remove bodily spillages, urine, vomit, faeces.
* Move beds and other furniture safely and decontaminate them.
* Clean at high and low levels (e.g., removing and replacing curtains, using ladders where necessary).
* Buff, scrub and redress floors; perform carpet cleaning using appropriate machinery, including under‑bed cleaning.
* Move patients safely using wheelchairs, beds or trolleys as required.
* Move deceased patients appropriately and sensitively.
Person specification
* Level 2 qualification in English and Maths.
* Proven ability to understand and comply with detailed procedures, signs and instructions, and retain information.
* Proven ability to organise and prioritise own workload and follow written instructions.
* Confidence in dealing with people over the telephone and face to face.
* Previous experience of working with patients/clients.
* Previous cleaning and/or portering experience.
Special aptitudes
* Ability to cover in the department and provide flexibility in hours, including bank holidays.
* Willingness to adapt to changing needs of the service.
Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS)
If the role requires a DBS check, an offer of employment is provisional upon satisfactory DBS clearance. The cost will be recovered from salary as a one‑off payment or over 3 months. Enhanced Disclosure cost £55.38; Standard Disclosure £27.38. This cost does not apply to volunteer posts.
