Overview

The Endoscopy unit at St Heliers has 4 scope rooms, a manometry room and use of a further room in X‑ray. The unit is continually expanding and is supported by a dedicated, well‑supported and dynamic team. We offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced HCA to learn a new speciality and build their experience and knowledge.

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group is a large NHS trust group caring for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. The sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

Responsibilities

1. Nursing all endoscopy patients before, during and after their endoscopy procedures.
2. Nursing all endoscopy patients before, during and after their surgical procedure and we also have day surgery patients.
3. Assisting the endoscopists in the scope rooms for all endoscopy procedures.
4. Preparing the rooms and the equipment.
5. Cannulating patients/BM's etc.
6. Stocking up rooms and recovery.
7. Decontaminating endoscopes.


Clinical Responsibilities

1. Using evidence‑based practice and a holistic approach to individualised nursing care, assess, plan and implement care for patients undergoing an endoscopic procedure under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
2. To establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers in order to reduce the patients anxiety about the procedure being undertaken.
3. Undertake the safe cannulation of all patients who are having their procedure under sedation in accordance with Trust Policies.
4. Establish and maintain effective communications with clients, families and carers and the multidisciplinary team.
5. To provide assistance to the team in positioning the patients ready for scoping including placement of the diathermy patient plate, oxygen and monitoring equipment.
6. To maintain the patients airway during an upper GI endoscopy and bronchoscopy under the supervision of a trained nurse.
7. To assist the endoscopist in the taking of biopsy's and brushings. To properly handle and label all specimens correctly and follow local policy to enable them to reach histology.
8. To act as the patients advocate and to comfort and empathise with the patient during lower GI procedures.
9. Assist with the safe storage and cleaning of equipment. Informing the nurse in charge when repairs are required.
10. To utilise opportunities to deliver health promotion messages to patients that you may be working with.
11. Provide emotional support to families that are given 'bad news.'
12. To be able to decontaminate any flexible endoscope. Use all decontamination equipment and be able to troubleshoot endoscopes and decontamination equipment when problems arise.
13. To adhere to Trust policies, procedures and protocols.
14. To assist the team in ensuring appropriate precautions are taken with body fluids and spillage of substances hazardous to health.
15. Assist in the documentation of all patients care on the nursing record before, during and after the patient's endoscopic procedure. To be able to use the endoscopy reporting system and to be able to help the endoscopist seek clinical results on ICM. To assist in the completion of the endoscopy register.
16. To maintain confidentiality of patient data at all times.


Education, Training and Personal Development

1. Attend all statutory and mandatory training as per Trust policy.
2. Be responsible for own personal development and participate in the appraisal of own performance (Professional Development Review), identifying training and development needs.
3. Participate in the Trust programme of clinical supervision.
4. Participate in clinical audits and suggest new ways of working for the improvement of the team.


Management

1. Assist the team in managing the resources required in the provision of endoscopy services.
2. Participate in departmental meetings.
3. Promote working practices in line with Clinical Governance/Risk Management. Assist in risk assessments, report incidents and fill in Datix reports according to trust policy.


General

1. The duties and responsibilities of the post will be in accordance with the policies, procedures and practice of The Epsom and St. Helier NHS Trust, which the Trust may amend from time to time. It is the nurse's responsibility to remain up to date with these and other trust policies and procedures.
2. Assist with exercising effective use of resources, maintaining stock levels and ensuring proper rotation of supplies. Make sure that at the end of every list that all procedure rooms are clean, tidy and restocked.
