Biomedical Scientist Team Manager – Infectious Sciences
We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist Team Manager to join our Infectious Sciences team at Southwest Pathology Services.
In this role you will expand your experience in teaching, mentoring, and operational management while supporting continuous improvement across laboratory quality systems.
The position requires rotation through all areas of the Infectious Sciences laboratory, with work on evening, weekend, and bank‑holiday shifts, including on‑call duties.

Key Responsibilities
- Rotate through all areas of the Infectious Sciences laboratory, performing routine and specialist investigations autonomously.
- Implement and propose procedural changes within your work area; lead as a specialist when appropriate.
- Provide professional leadership, training, and mentoring to Basic Grade, Trainee BMS, Associate Practitioners, and Medical Laboratory Assistants.
- Maintain the standards required by the Health Professions Council and provide technical advice to clinicians regarding test selection and timescales.
- Lead and participate in Health & Safety, Training, Audit, and other committees, and support senior management on‑call roster, weekend, and bank‑holiday rotations.
- Participate in clinical trials, development of new tests, research, and equipment validation, ensuring compliance with regulatory directives and accreditation bodies.
- Ensure compliance with UKAS, MHRA, NHSCSP, HTA, HFEA, and other relevant bodies.
- Utilise LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system, and other application software for data entry, documentation review, and quality assurance.
- Conduct audits, CAPA, and root cause analysis, and record actions in Q-Pulse.
- Manage consumables and conduct stocktakes in line with iPP policies.
- Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures and other quality documentation.
- Foster continuous professional development, introduce new technologies or systems as a change advocate.
- Support and monitor staff performance against laboratory standards and training plans.
Qualifications
- MSc Degree accredited by the Healthcare Professions Council and IBMS.
- HCPC Registration.
- Completed IBMS specialist portfolio in Microbiology/Virology or equivalent (if registration post 2004).
- Management qualification to ILM Level 3 or relevant experience.
- IBMS membership.
Experience
- Significant demonstrable broad-based experience as a specialist Biomedical Scientist.
- High accuracy, numeracy, interpretive skills, and strong problem-solving ability.
- Proficient in laboratory information systems and applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and statistical packages.
- Advanced understanding of theoretical and practical biomedical sciences and competence in routine and advanced laboratory procedures.
- Specialist development or expertise in Quality, Health & Safety, Training or Information Technology.
Skills & Knowledge
- Independently implements and proposes changes to procedures.
- Sound understanding of physiology, pathology, and scientific principles relevant to the speciality.
- Adequate skill for subjective result interpretation.
- Leadership qualities with experience in coaching, coordinating, and supervising a team.

Southwest Pathology Services is a joint venture between SYNLAB UK & Ireland and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The service delivers more than 9 million tests annually to a population of 500 000 and is IBMS accredited and UKAS accredited.
All staff commence on SYNLAB Hospital terms and conditions, are subject to a 6‑month probationary period, and may be entitled to a welcome bonus of £10 000.
Salary: £49,387 to £56,515 per annum, dependent on experience.
