The Post The Prevent Engagement Officer will help Brent Council carry out the Prevent strategy, which is part of the Government’s Counter-Terrorism Strategy called ‘Contest’. The officer will work to improve communication between Brent Council and community groups. They will build on existing relationships to make the Prevent Programme more transparent and better understood. The officer will create and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and community organisations. They will design and run Prevent programmes and events that are relevant to the community. The officer will also update training and support materials, lead community development sessions, workshops, and ongoing Prevent-themed events. They will work with community partners to identify and manage risks and raise awareness about safeguarding issues related to the Prevent Strategy and radicalisation. The officer will manage resources efficiently, lead the design of future Prevent projects, and set up a Community Consultation Groups. They will produce reports and recommendations based on accurate information, prepare regular monitoring and evaluation reports, briefings, and presentations for local and central government leadership. The officer will support the Prevent Team in outreach activities and other tasks as needed. They will attend meetings outside of regular business hours, including weekends, and ensure the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults at all times. The officer must follow Brent Council’s policies and procedures related to customer care, equal opportunities, information governance, data protection, and health and safety. The Person The ideal Prevent Engagement Officer will have a solid understanding of the Prevent Strategy and the radicalisation process. They should understand how extreme groups operate and their messaging, as well as the impact of hate crime on communities. Knowledge of partnership working across sectors, particularly between charitable, voluntary, and faith-based organisations, is essential. The officer must be able to work independently and make decisions within the remit of the role. Experience in engaging with hard-to-reach people and groups is crucial. Candidates should hold current Security Clearance or be willing to undertake the process if required. A formal project management qualification or project support experience is desirable, as is experience in running focus groups with community groups. Understanding current affairs and their impact on those vulnerable to radicalisation, as well as proficiency in additional languages, would be beneficial. Experience in working with community groups and collaborative project work is essential. The officer should have experience in community engagement with hard-to-reach groups and organisations, and in working with community and voluntary sector organisations, including charitable and faith-based sectors. Experience in providing support in a project-focused environment is desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong IT skills (Outlook, Word, and Excel), and the ability to balance commitments to meet deadlines are also essential.
