Description
Full‑time ‑ Permanent 37 hours a week. How society works. How crime works. Teach both.
About this job
At Wigan & Leigh College, you’ll teach A‑level Sociology to the AQA specification and Criminology to the WJEC specification. You’ll also deliver the criminal law element of the T Level Law programme. Your students will be heading to university, professional qualifications, and careers in law, social work, criminology, policing, and the public sector.
This role would suit you if you treat these subjects as ways of understanding the world. You’ll teach social structures, crime and deviance, and the justice system, and you’ll build the analytical and evaluative skills students will need at university and at work.
What you’ll do
* Teach A‑level Sociology (AQA) and Criminology (WJEC).
* Deliver criminal law content within the T Level Law programme.
* Plan and deliver lessons that develop analytical, evaluative, and research skills.
* Mark work, give clear feedback, and use assessment results to shape how you teach.
* Act as a Personal Tutor, supporting students through their course and into their next steps.
* Contribute to curriculum development, departmental initiatives, and recruitment activities including Open Evenings, taster sessions, and school liaison.
* Keep your subject knowledge current as research, policy, and the justice system develop.
What you’ll bring
* A degree in Sociology, Criminology, Law, or a closely related subject.
* A teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one. We’ll support you to get there.
* Strong subject knowledge across sociology and criminology, with confidence to teach criminal law.
* Experience teaching post‑16, or ready to develop in that area.
* Understanding of A‑level assessment requirements (AQA Sociology and WJEC Criminology) and T Level assessment.
What you’re like
* Curious. You read around your subjects and bring what you find into the classroom.
* Critical. You teach students to question what they read and how to evaluate it.
* Clear. You can explain difficult concepts in ways students hold onto.
* Engaged with current affairs. You connect your teaching to what’s happening.
* Organised. You stay on top of marking, attendance, and admin.
Essentials
* A degree in Sociology, Criminology, Law, or a related subject.
* GCSEs in English and Maths or equivalent.
* Right to work in the UK.
* You’ll need an enhanced DBS check, if you get the job, we’ll do this for you.
* You are committed to safeguarding and inclusion.
* You can travel across our sites.
* You are flexible and happy to work beyond standard hours when it’s needed.
