Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Propulsion Controls Engineer – Electric Differential System to be based at our customer’s site in Gaydon.
Our Embedded Systems Solutions department (ESS) encompasses all activities outlined under the Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) process framework, including systems engineering, software engineering, coding, and all levels of functional testing. Beyond core development, ESS also integrates critical supporting processes such as project management, risk assessment, functional safety, and cybersecurity, ensuring compliance with ASPICE standards and delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality embedded systems & solutions.
The Role:
We are seeking a technically skilled and forward-thinking Propulsion Controls & Calibration Engineer to lead the development, calibration, and functional safety definition of Electric Differential (E-Diff) control systems for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). This role is central to delivering precise torque vectoring, enhanced traction, and dynamic vehicle behaviour through advanced software controls and system-level design.
You will be responsible for defining control strategies, authoring functional requirements, calibrating system behaviour, and ensuring compliance with safety standards such as ISO 26262.
Area of Responsibility
Control System Design
1. Develop control algorithms for E-Diff systems including torque vectoring, traction control, and axle balancing
2. Translate vehicle-level performance targets into system-level control strategies and software requirements
3. Model and simulate control logic using MATLAB/Simulink and Stateflow
4. Collaborate with vehicle dynamics, propulsion, and software architecture teams to ensure seamless integration
Calibration & Testing
5. Calibrate E-Diff control parameters to optimize performance, energy efficiency, and drivability
6. Conduct vehicle-level testing across various drive modes and environmental conditions
7. Use tools such as ETAS INCA, Vector CANape, and CANalyzer for calibration, data logging, and fault analysis
8. Support software flashing, debugging, and validation during prototype and production phases
Functional Safety & Requirements
9. Conduct Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA) and support ASIL decomposition
10. Author and manage functional and technical safety requirements for E-Diff systems
11. Ensure traceability of safety requirements through the V-model development lifecycle
12. Collaborate with safety managers and system architects to develop safety concepts and support safety case documentation
Knowledge / Experience
13. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
14. Strong experience in propulsion controls, software calibration, or vehicle dynamics systems
15. Strong proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, embedded C, and calibration tools (INCA, CANape)
16. Solid understanding of BEV architectures, torque coordination, and E-Diff control principles
17. Experience with ISO 26262 and functional safety lifecycle activities
18. Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols (CAN, LIN, FlexRay)
19. Excellent analytical, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
20. Experience with Vehicle Supervisory Controller (VSC) architecture and multi-domain feature integration
21. Exposure to AUTOSAR, model-based development workflows, and HIL/SIL platforms
22. Knowledge of traction control, regenerative braking, and energy optimization strategies
23. Certification in functional safety (., TüV Functional Safety Engineer)
24. Experience working with OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers in propulsion or chassis domains
