Job overview

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Clinical Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Pelvic Pain, offering senior O&G trainees, post-CCT doctors, and those pursuing CESR or OOPE/OOPT the opportunity to develop advanced expertise in complex benign gynaecology. Based primarily at Princess Royal Hospital, with work across Trust sites, the role focuses on laparoscopic surgery, pelvic pain, and multidisciplinary endometriosis care within the BSGE-accredited Sussex Endometriosis Centre.

Working under the supervision of Miss Rebecca Mallick, Consultant Gynaecologist and Sussex Endometriosis Centre Lead, the fellow will gain high-volume exposure to advanced laparoscopic procedures, hysteroscopy, and specialist ultrasound, with structured training and progression towards independent practice. The post offers a rich mix of theatre, clinic, and MDT work, alongside opportunities for research, audit, and teaching.

This is an exceptional chance to join a dynamic, research-active team committed to improving outcomes for women with chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, and other gynaecological conditions, while advancing your surgical skills, leadership experience, and academic profile.

Main duties of the job

This fellowship offers structured, high-volume training in advanced laparoscopic and open non-cancer gynaecological surgery, pelvic pain management, outpatient hysteroscopy, and advanced gynaecological ultrasound. Working closely with Miss Rebecca Mallick, Consultant Gynaecologist and Lead for the BSGE-accredited Sussex Endometriosis Centre, the postholder will be part of a multidisciplinary tertiary referral service for complex endometriosis.

Ideal for post-CCT clinicians, CESR candidates, or trainees on OOPE/OOPT, the role provides weekly theatre sessions including complex endometriosis excision, ureterolysis, bowel and urological procedures, laparoscopic hysterectomy and myomectomy, and open non-cancer surgery. Fellows will attend pelvic pain and endometriosis clinics, perform outpatient hysteroscopy, participate in MDTs, and develop expertise in advanced ultrasound.

The post offers opportunities in research, audit, service development, and teaching, with support to complete RCOG SITMs and gain advanced surgical and scanning skills. The fellow will contribute to regional laparoscopic training, guideline development, and quality improvement, while working alongside radiology, colorectal and urology surgeons, pain specialists, and specialist nurses in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Working for our organisation

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) and Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) comprises 19 substantive consultants, including three gynaecological oncologists, one obstetrician, one gynaecologist, and the remainder practising across both obstetrics and gynaecology.

At PRH, the medical team includes eight resident doctors at registrar level, one of whom is part of the KSS ST3–7 rotation, and seven resident doctors at SHO level, with two on the KSS ST1–2 rotation. RSCH hosts nine resident doctors at registrar level (three clinical fellows and six on the KSS ST3–7 rotation) and nine resident doctors at SHO level, including two on the KSS ST1–2 rotation. Additionally, two F1 doctors are based in gynaecological oncology at RSCH.

The department benefits from dedicated educational leadership, with Mr Vuivun Wong serving as College Tutor at PRH and Miss Abi Kalaparan at RSCH, ensuring structured supervision, training, and development for medical staff across both sites.
