Job Description

The SEN 1-2-1 Teaching Assistant provides dedicated support to pupils with special educational needs, ensuring they receive personalised assistance tailored to their individual learning requirements. The role involves working closely with teaching staff to facilitate learning, promote independence, and support the social and emotional development of pupils within the educational setting.


Key Job Duties

* Support individual pupils with special educational needs by providing one-to-one assistance during lessons and activities.
* Implement personalised learning plans and strategies as directed by teaching staff and special educational needs coordinators.
* Assist with communication, behaviour management, and social interaction to enhance the pupil’s learning experience and engagement.
* Monitor and record pupil progress and report observations to the relevant teaching staff to inform ongoing support plans.
* Facilitate access to the curriculum by adapting resources and activities appropriate to the pupil’s needs and abilities.
* Encourage independence and self-confidence in pupils, promoting positive behaviour and resilience.
* Support the pupil during unstructured times such as break and lunch periods to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
* Attend relevant meetings, training, and professional development sessions to maintain up-to-date knowledge of SEN practises.
* Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures at all times.


Required / Desirable Qualifications

* Recognised qualification in supporting teaching and learning (e.g., Level 2 or Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools).
* Basic first aid training is desirable.
* Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check clearance.


Education

* Secondary education level, typically GCSEs or equivalent, including English and Mathematics.
* Further education or training relevant to special educational needs is advantageous.


Experience

* Proven experience working with children with special educational needs in an educational setting.
* Experience of delivering one-to-one support to pupils with a range of needs including learning difficulties, behavioural challenges, and physical disabilities.
* Familiarity with Individual Education Plans and behaviour management strategies.


Knowledge and Skills

* Understanding of the SEN Code of Practise and relevant legislation.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, suitable for working with children and staff.
* Ability to build positive, supportive relationships with pupils, fostering trust and respect.
* Good organisational skills and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
* Patience, empathy, and a calm approach to managing challenging behaviour.
* Basic IT skills to assist with record keeping and accessing digital learning resources.


Working Conditions

* Based primarily within a school environment, working in classrooms, resource areas, and occasionally outdoor settings.
* May require physical activity such as assisting pupils with mobility or personal care.
* Regular interaction with children who may exhibit challenging behaviour or require close supervision.
* Work pattern typically aligned with the school term and daily timetable, including breaks and lunchtimes.
* Occasional requirement to attend meetings or training outside normal school hours.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
