Interim Legal Counsel - 12 Month Fixed-Term Contract

We are recruiting an experienced Legal Counsel to join a UK‑based organisation on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract to cover a period of maternity leave. The role involves providing pragmatic legal and commercial advice across a broad range of complex matters, including regulatory compliance, large‑scale outsourcing arrangements, contractual variations, and dispute resolution.
The role sits within a central corporate function that supports multiple business areas, working closely with teams such as HR, Finance, Communications, and other specialist functions. This is a collaborative, high‑impact position where legal advice helps shape decision‑making and supports the effective operation of the wider organisation.
Key Responsibilities
* Delivering timely legal and commercial advice to internal stakeholders across a range of functions
* Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of contracts, including client‑facing, supplier, and partnership agreements
* Advising on complex commercial projects, outsourcing arrangements, contractual changes, and disputes
* Supporting public sector and government procurement activity
* Assisting with the identification, assessment, and management of legal and commercial risk
* Providing training and guidance to internal teams on legal, regulatory, and commercial matters
* Supporting compliance with applicable laws, internal policies, and governance frameworks
* Managing external legal advisers and monitoring legal spend, under appropriate supervision
* Working collaboratively with colleagues across the in‑house legal team
* Providing initial advice on disputes and potential litigation
* Advising on regulatory and compliance matters relevant to the business
About You
* Degree‑level education or equivalent professional experience
* Qualified solicitor or barrister in the UK (or equivalent jurisdiction)
* Experience gained in private practice and/or in‑house roles within a relevant commercial environment
* Strong background in commercial contracts, including high‑value and complex outsourcing arrangements
* Knowledge and experience of public procurement
* Confident advising on legal and commercial risk and options
* Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skillsAbility to build effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels
* Proven capability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment
