Overview

The Laboratory Interior Design Manager will manage the creative design process of laboratory and controlled environments fit-out projects from initial brief through tender, installation, and successful completion. They will work with the Project Director, Pre Contracts Manager, and Technical Services Manager, engage with science clients to understand requirements, develop innovative design solutions, lead design pitches, select materials, coordinate with third-party designers, ensure statutory compliance, and oversee design quality throughout construction.


Key Accountabilities

* Area’s Interior Design Manager for laboratory fit-outs, designing functional, safe, and aesthetically appropriate lab environments; integrate technical requirements with spatial, ergonomic, and aesthetic aspects.
* Design and Space Planning: create functional layouts and concept designs.
* Client Engagement: meet with clients to understand needs and develop tailored solutions.
* Design Development: develop designs considering operational efficiency and safety compliance.
* Pitching & Presentations: lead design pitches and present concepts to clients and stakeholders.
* Layout and Space Optimization: optimize layouts for workflows, equipment placement, and storage.
* Zoning and Circulation: designate zones (wet/dry labs, offices, storage, cleanrooms) and ensure smooth staff/equipment movement.
* Flexibility and Future-proofing: design for future reconfigurations and updates.


Collaboration with Stakeholders

* Client Briefing: collaborate with scientists, lab managers, and stakeholders to define space needs.
* Collaboration with Technical Teams: coordinate with architects, engineers, and technical services to integrate HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and gas.
* Internal Collaboration: work with sales, engineers, project managers, and construction teams to maintain design integrity.
* Vendor and Contractor Liaison: engage with suppliers to source products meeting specifications and design vision.


Material and Finishes Selection

* Durability and Maintenance: select materials with chemical resistance, durability, and ease of cleaning.
* Safety Standards: ensure materials meet safety/h health regulations (fire resistance, anti-slip, non-toxic finishes).
* Aesthetic Considerations: balance functionality with professional aesthetics.


Ergonomics and User-Centric Design

* Workstation Design: design ergonomically for comfort and efficiency.
* Accessibility: ensure compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., ADA).
* Lighting Design: provide task lighting with glare reduction and energy efficiency.


Integration of Technical Systems

* Lab-Specific Requirements: integrate fume hoods, cleanrooms, containment areas into the design.
* Utilities and Infrastructure: plan routing of water, gas, electricity functionality and aesthetics.
* Acoustic Considerations: address noise control.


Regulatory Compliance

* Health and Safety: ensure compliance with ventilation, hazardous materials placement, and emergency exits.
* Laboratory Standards: adhere to ISO, OSHA, and local regulations for lab environments.
* Cleanroom and Containment Design: meet air quality and biosafety standards.


Sustainability and Environmental Design

* Green Building Practices: use sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems; may qualify for certifications like LEED.
* Waste Management Solutions: plan segregation, storage, and disposal for lab waste.
* Energy Efficiency: optimize natural light, airflow, and energy systems.


Furniture and Equipment Selection

* Custom Laboratory Furniture: select or design durable, space-efficient furniture.
* Specialized Storage Solutions: design storage for chemicals, samples, and equipment with safety and accessibility in mind.
* Modular and Flexible Solutions: use modular systems for future changes.


Project Coordination and Management

* Budget Management: work within budget while maintaining quality and safety.
* Schedule Coordination: align milestones with project schedule and coordinate with contractors/suppliers.
* Site Visits and Supervision: oversee installation and address issues during construction/fit-out.


Documentation and Reporting

* Design Presentations: prepare proposals, 3D renderings, and mood boards for client approval.
* Detailed Drawings and Specifications: provide drawings and specs for contractors during construction and fit-out.


Professional Skills & Experience

* Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or related field.
* 3-5 years of experience in laboratory, healthcare, or commercial interior design.
* Technical Knowledge: strong understanding of laboratory design standards, health and safety, HVAC, and cleanroom principles.
* Design Software Proficiency: AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and related tools.
* Presentation Skills: ability to pitch design concepts to clients.
* Problem-Solving: ability to develop creative design solutions.
* Attention to Detail: high-quality workmanship.
* Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
