Overview

We are seeking to recruit an experienced Teaching Associate to contribute to innovative teaching in Historical Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, covering seminars, lectures and fieldwork for undergraduate and masters.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Full accountability for teaching across our Archaeology programmes, including:
o Designing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including fieldwork.
o Contributing to module delivery and assessment.
o Preparing and modifying teaching materials.
o Communicating material and engaging students, observing and responding to their interventions.
o Responding to student queries and introducing innovative teaching methods.
o Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate project/dissertations.
o Undertaking module assessment, moderation, feedback and final grades.
* Attend scheduled team meetings.
* Liaise between students or groups and programme directors.
* Undertake module evaluation, including student feedback and reflection on teaching design and delivery.
* Undertake curriculum development, planning, delivery and evaluation of modules; supervise provision with support from senior colleagues.
* Work to enhance the student experience by delivering prompt advice and feedback.
* Act as Academic Tutor for an allocated number of UG/MA students.
* Respond promptly and proactively to teaching‑related requests and issues.
* Work with the Professional Service Team to signpost students with additional support needs.
* Carry out teaching‑related and administrative work as assigned by the Head of School and committees, and self‑generate work through innovation.
* Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
* Embed the University’s sustainability strategy into teaching and administrative activities wherever possible.


Person Specification


Essential Criteria

* PhD (or equivalent experience) in Archaeology.
* Expertise in Built Heritage/Buildings Archaeology, Conservation and Archaeology fieldwork methods.
* Proven ability to deliver high‑quality teaching and learning.
* Ability to design, carry out and coordinate assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate learning.
* Ability to provide timely, detailed feedback on student assignments, including project work.
* Ability to use online teaching environments (e.g., Blackboard) effectively.
* Effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to respond positively and informatively to student questions and quickly assess support needs.
* Ability to work both within a team and independently.
* Strategic and innovative thinking.
* Planning and prioritising own daily work and forward planning.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and confidence in engaging with a wide range of people.
* Excellent organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
* Demonstrated capacity to meet the educational needs of a diverse body of learners.


Desirable Criteria

* Recognised teaching qualification or accreditation.
* Experience coordinating and working with colleagues in delivery and assessment of team‑taught modules.
* Experience in dissertation supervision.
* Experience delivering employability activities.


Compensation and Details

* Grade: 7.3
* Salary: £38,784 per annum (pro rata)
* Duration: Fixed‑term 01.09.26 – 30.08.2027
* Hours: part‑time, 0.8FTE
* Working pattern: part‑time 80%
