Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Biomedical Scientist role in the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department across Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe hospitals.

The successful candidate will be the section lead for Automated Haematology and as such applications are invited from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with excellent knowledge in Haematology, Coagulation & Blood Transfusion. Candidates would ideally have some personnel management experience.

The department uses Sysmex analysers in Haematology and Coagulation and Ortho Vision analysers in Transfusion and. Equipment is standardised across both sites.

We deliver a 24 hour service and you would be expected to work a shift pattern to support provision of this service.

Main duties of the job

1. Deputise for Lead BMS during periods of absence.
2. Assist with the day-to-day supervision and performance of the Routine Haematology Department.
3. Assist in the teaching and training of all technical aspects of Haematology, with specific responsibility for the supervision of basic and post-basic qualification project work.
4. Assist with the general maintenance, calibration and quality control of automated, semi-automated equipment in Haematology and the installation, integration and
monitoring of new equipment and technologies.
5. Assist with the authorisation of completed work for printing of reports, initiating further investigation as and when appropriate, and bringing to the attention of medical staff such results which require clinical judgement and comment, with specific responsibility for routine Haematology results.
6. Participate in staff appraisals of BMS, Trainee BMS, AP and MLA staff and assist in development of PDP.
7. Contribute to the Blood Sciences Quality Management system under guidance of the Lead and/or Head BMS.
8. Contribute to the general management function of the Haematology and Blood Transfusion department.

Person specification

Education, Qualification & Training

Essential criteria

19. Registration with the Healthcare Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist
20. A Biomedical Science degree or equivalent
21. MSc or Specialist diploma in Haematology with Automated Haematology experience
22. Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)

Experience

Essential criteria

23. Worked within a diagnostic lab, post registration
24. Experience in a Blood Sciences laboratory
25. Working knowledge of all blood sciences disciplines
26. Knowledge of quality management systems/requirements

Desirable criteria

27. Experience of a UKAS assessment
28. Leadership training undertaken

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential criteria

29. Working knowledge of all disciplines of Blood Sciences, including Phlebotomy
30. Good I.T. & Keyboard skills
31. Knowledge of Health and Safety policies and procedures with experience of Health & Safety representative role.
32. Experience with risk assessment techniques
33. Knowledge of Quality Management software packages.
34. Ability to train staff at all levels and to monitor competency requirements
35. Clear understanding of ISO 15189:2022 standards
36. Organisational skills to run a laboratory section and trouble shoot problems.
37. Excellent communication skills at all levels.
38. Evidence of setting targets professional/personal and following to completion
39. Ability to work across disciplines and to liaise closely with counterparts
40. Diplomatic and assertive
41. Good communicator. Able to take the lead role but also with good strengths in a team situation.
42. Able to communicate at the most senior levels, imparting controversial and highly complex information.
43. Computer keyboard skills & use of Microsoft Office suite.
