Job summary
We are delighted to seek applications for the post of Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) to join our team in Salisbury.
This substantive position is a replacement post, and the successful applicant will join the 7 existing Intensive Care Consultants who lead patient care in the ICU, one of the premier services in this high-performing Foundation Trust. The CQC has recently described Salisbury's Critical Care services as 'Outstanding'.
Our ICU is housed in a modern facility with 12 beds, currently supporting a flexible mix of level 2 and level 3 patients.
Interviews will be held on Wednesday, 6th August 2025.
Main duties of the job
This is a 10 PA post, with potential for an additional programmed activity. Typically, 4.5 PAs are allocated as DCC to ICU, with 4 PAs outside ICU in the applicant's base specialty, and 1.5 SPAs. The postholder may have time allocated for research, which can be discussed with Clinical Leads and the Clinical Director upon appointment.
The SPA proportion may increase with additional responsibilities over time.
Our current team includes 8 ICU consultants sharing weekday daytime workload, with 7 providing out-of-hours non-resident cover. Many consultants have a second specialty in anaesthesia, with one in Emergency Medicine. We welcome applications from those with dual CCTs or single specialty ICM.

The ICU admits approximately 400 patients annually, including elective post-op and emergency cases across medical and surgical specialties. Surgical patients constitute 20% of the workload. One ICU consultant is responsible at all times, leading a team of resident staff and working closely with the nurse in charge. Duty periods are from Monday to Friday or Friday to Monday, split equally among consultants. Some weeknights are covered by colleagues during weekday duty periods.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Specialist Training (Essential)
* Possession, or within 6 months of possession, of a CCT in Intensive Care Medicine leading to GMC Specialist Register entry
* Full GMC registration with a license to practice
Management Experience (Essential)
* Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, motivate, and develop staff
* Willingness to work within NHS performance targets
Experience/Clinical Skills (Essential)
* Wide experience and high competence in Intensive Care Medicine/FFICM or equivalent
* Sound clinical judgment, logical thinking, and analytical skills
* Up-to-date evidence-based practice knowledge
